Phoebe Waller-Bridge's show Fleabag first hit BBC Three in 2016 and later landed on Amazon Prime Video in 2019. People couldn't get enough of the realness and relatability of the main character's life.

Waller-Bridge did it all - writing, creating, and acting in the series, which only lasted two seasons but made a huge impact. It scooped up some Primetime Emmys including ones for Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Waller-Bridge has made it clear that there won't be a third season of Fleabag, even though the show has been a hit with fans. In an interview with BBC in 2019, Waller-Bridge declared,

"I have thought about it and there isn't going to be one. This is it—this is the final curtain."

In the first season, we saw Fleabag dealing with grief, guilt, and a struggling café, using sex and breaking the fourth wall as ways to cope. The second season ended on a positive note for the main character, but the bittersweet ending left many viewers wanting more.

While fans are still heartbroken over the climax of the show five years after its finale, Andrew Scott who played the 'Hot Priest' on the show had humourous quip for them. While talking to Entertainment Weekly he said,

"Stop watching. Stop crying. Stop crying in your room with your curtains closed. Do something better with your life. It's a great show, we all love it, but come on now, pull yourself together. Open the curtains and go outside."

Reasons why Fleabag Season 3 is not happening

1) Creative integrity and artistic vision

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been pretty firm about wrapping up Fleabag after season two, saying she thinks the story has run its course. As the creator, writer, and star of the show, Waller-Bridge had a specific vision in mind for the character and storyline. She didn't want to drag it out and compromise the integrity of the show.

Waller-Bridge is happy with how things ended, believing the protagonist had a solid character development from self-loathing to self-acceptance. She just wants to let the character move on and live her life.

2) Respecting the character's journey

Waller-Bridge decided to end the show after season two because she wanted to give the characters and story the respect they deserved. She felt that continuing the series further would not do justice to Fleabag's journey and growth.

The second season wrapped up on a hopeful note, with her finding peace and closure. Waller-Bridge believes that a third season would be unnecessary and could take away from the impact of the show's conclusion. She wanted viewers to feel satisfied and content, knowing that the lead had found her way forward.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge said,

"I have to respect that arc and let her go and live for a bit."

3) Focusing on new creative ventures

Though fans have wanted more of Fleabag, Waller-Bridge is focused on creating new stuff for her Amazon Prime Video deal. She has been busy with lots of cool projects in the works, so she's putting her energy into exploring fresh stories and characters.

Maybe she'll come back to it down the line when the character is older, but for now, she's all about trying new things and pushing herself creatively. The show ended on a high and continues to remain a special part of her body of work, while also giving her to chance to explore new projects and wow the audiences.

While speaking to Deadline backstage at the Golden Globes, Waller-Bridge stated,

"I haven't changed my mind about season 3. It feels more and more about being the right decision."

4) Maintaining the series' legacy

Waller-Bridge decided to end Fleabag after two seasons to keep the show's legacy and impact intact. By wrapping up the story while it's still at its best, she ensures that the series will be remembered as a beloved and highly praised work.

Waller-Bridge knows the importance of leaving the audience wanting more and believes that ending it on a strong note will secure its place in TV history as a groundbreaking piece of art. This choice not only honors the story's integrity but also cements Fleabag as a modern classic that will be remembered and talked about for years to come.

5) Avoiding potential narrative pitfalls

Waller-Bridge probably decided to end it after the second season to avoid any potential storytelling problems that could come up if Fleabag continued. She's a great storyteller and knows it can be tough to keep up the same emotional depth and character growth that made the first two seasons great.

Waller-Bridge's decision to end the series at its creative peak has been praised, as she believes the story has reached its natural conclusion and wants to respect the character's arc. While the possibility of revisiting Fleabag in the future has not been entirely ruled out, for now, the creator remains focused on developing new content for her recent deal with Amazon Prime Video.

Fleabag is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
