Chicago P.D. Season 12 will premiere on NBC on September 25, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET. The upcoming season is expected to be as eventful as the previous ones. The synopsis of the series premiere on IMDb reads:
“A month after Voight's close brush with death, Intelligence is overwhelmed with cases as they catch a high-stakes drug bust.”
In season 11, Voight was kidnapped by a dangerous criminal. His team, led by Hailey Upton, brought him back to safety. However, Chicago P.D. Season 12 will not feature Upton, one of the most popular characters in the series.
According to Variety, Tracy Spiridakos, the actor playing Upton, left the series to explore other career options. Thus, the character of Upton is replaced in Chicago P.D. Season 12. Read on to find out everything that is known about the matter.
Why is Upton being replaced in Chicago P.D. Season 12?
Tracy Spiridakos voluntarily left the show after its eleventh season. Variety reported on May 21, 2024, that Spiridakos, who joined the show in its fourth season, wanted to explore other career options besides the NBC show. Thus, she made her wish to exit the show known to the showrunner, Gwen Sigan, at the end of season 10.
Spiridakos told Variety the following ahead of the season 11 finale:
“I decided at the end of my sixth season, which is when I had reached out to Gwen and to everyone at Wolf to let them know that I just wanted to do one more year. I wanted us to send out the character with one last season."
She continued:
“It was a hard decision — very, very hard. I love everybody on the show — cast, crew, producers, writers, everybody. It’s such an incredible team. I was just curious what was out there for me and wanted to switch it up, and that was it.”
Spiridakos’ decision to exit the show was written into the script, and in the season 11 finale, Upton takes a taxi and sets off to a new workplace, though her destination is not revealed. Thus, after appearing in 140 episodes, Upton will not be seen in Chicago P.D. Season 12.
Who is replacing Hailey Upton in season 12?
TVLine reported on July 31, 2024, that the character of Kiana Cook, played by Toya Turner, would replace Detective Upton in Chicago P.D. Season 12. Cook, TVLine reports, is a patrol officer who “loves the adrenaline of the job and its stakes and doesn’t blink in the face of chaos.”
Turner has recently been seen in NBC‘s New Amsterdam. Turner attended the prestigious British American Drama Academy (BADA) at Oxford University and has appeared in shows like Grey’s Anatomy, The Mick, Easy, and Empire. Further, Turner has previously appeared in the One Chicago universe, guest-starring in Chicago Med and Chicago Fire.
What to expect from Chicago P.D. Season 12?
Upton's exit will naturally affect Chicago P.D. Season 12 since her chemistry with Voight has been one of the show's highlights for a long time. However, Kiana Cook's entry might add another dimension to the world of the intelligence unit.
Further, the upcoming season might feature a wedding. Last season, Burgess and Ruzek got engaged for a third time. If things go well, season 12 might see their marriage. Additionally, Shawn Hatosy is joining the cast as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, per a TV Insider report. His friction with Voight might stir up the plot in season 12.
Though Upton will not appear in Chicago P.D. Season 12, plenty of other things keep fans excited for the next season, which arrives on September 25, 2024, on NBC.
