The ending of Game of Thrones has now become synonymous with all bad endings since the famed HBO show failed to live up to the expectations of the show's immense fanbase. Since then, Game of Thrones has been used as an example of projects that started beautifully but did not reach the desired conclusion.
Many, including some actors on set, agreed that the show did not end in a way that was worth being proud of. However, Kristian Nairn, who played Hodor in the show, claimed in a recent interview that he disagreed with the verdict fans had about the ending of season 8.
After the release of his memoir, Beyond the Throne: Epic Journeys, Enduring Friendships, and Surprising Tales, Kristian Nairn explained his take on the finale in a September 24 interview with Screenrant, where he elaborated:
"It's not perfect, no,...But also keep in mind I'm not a scriptwriter, neither are 99.99% of people. There are some who think they are, but I do know I'm not, so I have that. So [the response] disappointed me really."
He continued:
"It disappointed me because the show had been held in such high regard, and I don't think it deserved it. I don't think there was a way they could have ended it to keep people happy."
He went on to elaborate on the backlash Danaerys (Emilia Clarke) faced for her character development and explained how he could see it coming.
Kristian Nairn explains how Danaerys' character twist seemed evident before Game of Thrones season 8
One of the things that received heavy criticism in the final season of Game of Thrones was Danaerys' character development, which ended with her trying to burn the entire King's Landing and its people. Fans hit out at this change, claiming that the Mother of Dragons acted completely out of character in the last season.
However, according to Nairn, there were signs of this happening before it happened. He explained:
"Although people say that Daenerys acted out of character and stuff and so quickly, but I just don't understand how they didn't see that throughout the show. I was waiting for it to happen the whole way. The signs were there guys. She actually said at one stage that as soon as Drogon's big enough, she's going to burn the ass out of King's Landing."
This did happen in Game of Thrones and, looking back, it seems that Nairn is right to take Danaerys' words seriously.
The Hodor actor went on to say that the criticism he has for the last season is different. He revealed that he felt the longer episodes could have been replaced with more episodes, which would improve the quality of the final two seasons.
He concluded the talk about Game of Thrones by expressing his regret that people weren't happier with the end product. He added:
"I just wish people were happier with it, because I really enjoyed it,...The scenes with Peter [Dinklage] walking through the rubble and people said, 'oh God, I really wanted Cersei to get a really horrible death.' And what about their death? It was like a Renaissance painting. It was art."
Sadly, it would be hard to change the perception of Game of Thrones now, but perhaps House of the Dragon, which is still running, can soften fans towards the franchise.
