JonBenét Ramsey was a child beauty pageant contestant who was found dead in the basement at the Ramsey residence at 755 15th Street in Boulder, Colorado. It was the night after Christmas, on December 26, 1996, that the six-year-old was found by her father, John Ramsey, almost seven hours after she passed away.

JonBenét had sustained a major head injury, and as per reports, she was choked to death by an intruder. Initially, all the suspicions were directed toward the parents, John and Patsy Ramsey. However, even after years of investigation, the authorities could not collect enough evidence to prove the parents to be culprits. JonBenét Ramsey's murder received national attention mainly for the mystery surrounding it.

The murder still remains one of the most mysterious cold cases in the history of the United States. ABC's 20/20 season 47 episode 11 titled Forever Young: Who Killed Jon Benet Ramsey? documents the case behind the murder and the entire investigation that followed. The episode was released on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 9 pm EST.

JonBenét Ramsey was the daughter of John Ramsey and his second wife, Patsy Ramsey. John was president of a computer software company, which later became a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin. Patsy was a former model who won the title of Miss West Virginia in 1977.

JonBenét was born on August 6, 1990, the younger of two children. She had an elder sibling named Burke Ramsey, born in 1987. The family moved to Boulder when JonBenét was a year old. Patsy began enrolling JonBenét in child beauty contests, where she won several titles and gained popularity.

On December 26, 1996, John and Patsy woke up to find a ransom letter that indicated that JonBenét had been kidnapped. Around 8:00 am EST, Patsy called 911, and two officers immediately arrived.

As per a People article, published on December 13, 2024, Patsy claimed that she found the ransom letter on the kitchen stairs. The two-and-a-half-page note claimed that it came from a small group of foreign faction, asking John Ramsey for a sum of $118,000. This was surprisingly the exact bonus he received on Christmas the previous year.

However, hours after being reported kidnapped, JonBenét was found dead in her house. Her body was found inside the basement behind a latched door, which made the theory of a home intrusion highly doubted. Situations turned more grave when the autopsy reports arrived.

An article in The Denver Post, published on September 30, 2016, provided deep insights into the text of JonBenét's autopsy reports. The forensics revealed that she had a fractured skull, mainly caused by hitting with a blunt force. However, the cause of her death was declared to be strangulation, which had clear traces on the body.

The body of JonBenét had duct tape around the mouth, while her neck and wrists were throttled with a garrote. Although no se*men was found in the victim's va*inal area, the body had suffered from signs of abuse. In the scene, her torso was covered with a blanket.

Forensics found that someone had damaged her va*inal area with a paintbrush, then wiped it to remove all the traces. As per a CBS, published on December 16, 2004, forensic investigators were successful in creating a DNA profile from the blood samples back in December 2003. However, this met a dead end, considering none of the Ramsay family members matched the DNA.

Even the feds went through their data in the Combined DNA Index System, with over 1.6 million samples; however, no profiles matched. It was on July 9, 2008, when the Boulder District Attorney's office excluded the Ramsey family members from the suspect list with the advancements in touch DNA analysis.

In October 2010, the cold case of JonBenét was reopened again by the Boulder police, and over the next decade, numerous detectives embarked on the case. Mark Beckner, the former chief of the Boulder Police Office, acted as one of the leads heading the case.

The Ramsey family was previously charged with the murder of their child. This led to increased media and general scrutiny of the Ramseys. It was in 1999, when L. Lin Wood, the attorney from the Ramsey family, filed a defamation lawsuit against those people.

In the following years, John and Patsy filed defamation charges against numerous authors, publishers, and media persons who tried to twist the story in a pessimistic light. Back in September 2016, in a CBS documentary titled The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey, forensic pathologist Werner Spitz blamed JonBenét's elder brother, Burke Ramsey, for having murdered his sibling.

As per a Time article, published on October 7, 2016, the attorneys of Burke filed a defamation charge against Spitz for a compensatory damage charge of $150 million on October 6, 2016. Later, on December 28, 2016, Burke filed a civil lawsuit against CBS, asking for $250 million for compensatory damages and $500 million for punitive damages, which was later settled in January 2019.

The Ramsey family had moved from Boulder to Atlanta in 1997, almost six months after the murder. Patsy Ramsey passed away in 2006 due to ovarian cancer and was buried right next to her daughter. John Ramsey, now 80, is still involved with the Boulder Police Department in search of the murderer of his daughter.
