Max has canceled the reboot of the incredibly popular series Pretty Little Liars, which premiered in July 2022 under the title PLL: Original Sin and was redubbed PLL: Summer School for its second season. It comes as a shocker to fans who were waiting with bated breath for the next installment of the show.
Three months later, at the end of the second season's cliffhanger, the show was canceled. Although the show was unique and modern in its take, it was not deemed viable for a third season by Max. There was no official reason given for cancelation, but one could speculate that the show didn't pull in enough viewers for Max.
The journey of the reboot series
The reboot series Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin was a fresh spin on the original Pretty Little Liars series that already had gained such a big fan base. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring developed the reboot to incorporate the best elements of the original series with a take on a slasher movie.
New faces like Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, and Mallory Bechtel took up the mantle and rejuvenated the characters. Its first season prompted the rebranding of the second season as PLL: Summer School, released in May 2023.
Why was Pretty Little Liars season 3 canceled?
It's not surprising to hear that the reboot of Pretty Little Liars was canceled after two seasons, especially as part of the greater trend witnessed around Max. Many shows on the platform ended after two seasons, making it difficult for newer shows to be engaged with.
Impact on the fanbase
The fan base was disappointed and frustrated by the abrupt cancellation of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School. After the end of season two, the show seemed to have lined up more threats and mysteries. With new antagonists and familiar faces, fans were eager to see the storyline grow.
The cancellation after two seasons is a pointer to the issues streaming networks are facing as they find it difficult to hold on to viewership and sustain their original content. Despite the great creative efforts it took from its talented actors and crew, the show was left hanging without a third season.
The legacy of Pretty Little Liars continues, through the original series and the memories the reboot has created.
