Hulu's Betrayal: The Perfect Husband chronicled the dark double life of Spencer Herron, who assaulted several of his students, including Rachel Heller, who was one of the victims to step forward and accuse the teacher. The documentary, which was based on the podcast of the same name, was told from the perspective of Jenifer Faison, Spencer Herron's wife.

The documentary also featured testimony from Rachel Heller, one of Herron's former students, who became a victim of her teacher. However, according to Rachel Heller, she never consented to Hulu using her image or voice in the docuseries.

She claimed that she was initially told that she would have complete control over her footage, but despite not signing a clause to release the footage, Betrayal: The Perfect Husband still featured her.

In 2023, Rachel Heller filed a lawsuit against Hulu, ABC News, and a production company behind the docuseries, Glass Entertainment Group. She also claimed that Jenifer Faison, a TV producer by profession, was working with the producers of the series and had assured her that her footage would not be used without her consent, however, it was ultimately used.

According to the lawsuit, Heller’s podcast interview was used throughout the docuseries, and the third episode was almost based all around her. The conclusion to this lawsuit was never revealed.

Hulu is, however, coming back with a sequel to Betrayal: The Perfect Husband on July 30, 2024, titled Betrayal: A Father's Secret.

Rachel Heller claimed in the lawsuit that her presentation on Spencer Herron's crimes was used without her permission

The footage, which became the source of the controversy, came from a presentation that Heller and Herron’s ex-wife, Jenifer Faison, gave to a criminal justice class at the University of North Georgia. Glass allegedly filmed this presentation, but Faison assured Rachel that it would not be used without her consent.

In the months that followed, Glass reportedly tried hard to persuade Heller to sign an agreement to release the footage. However, when she refused, they allegedly went forward with using the footage in Betrayal: The Perfect Husband.

As per the lawsuit, there was a betrayal involved in the making of Betrayal.

What did Spencer Herron do?

Spencer Herron was a Georgia-based school teacher, who was accused of multiple counts of s*xual assault in 2018. Seemingly a perfect husband and perfect professional, Spencer Herron used his power and authority to groom and assault several young women, including Rachel Heller.

When the accusations surfaced, his wife, who was not at all aware of this, dug deeper and found out that Herron was also a serial cheater and had many twisted relationships behind her back.

He was arrested in 2018, following which he confessed to the crimes. He was charged with five counts of s*xual assault and was sentenced to five years in prison (some records state six) and 15 years of probation. He was also registered as a s*x offender.

He was released from prison in July 2022, following which he has stayed out of the limelight.

Hulu's Betrayal: The Perfect Husband covered this case in detail, and even gave some information about his victims. Anyhow, it seems that Hulu had to deal with a lawsuit because of that but it is coming out with another story, this time following the case of Jason Lytton.

Meanwhile, Betrayal: The Perfect Husband is streaming on Hulu.
