Shrinking season 2 is the second season of the Apple TV+ original series, created by Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein, and Jason Segel. It stars Jason as Jimmy Laird, a therapist who lost his wife in a drunk driving accident. He works at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center alongside his mentor, Dr. Paul Rhoades (played by Harrison Ford), and fellow therapist Gaby (played by Jessica Williams).

Shrinking season 2 episode 5 deals with a subplot involving Paul's previous marriage. While he's begun a new romance with Dr. Julie Baram, he feels deeply uncomfortable when his ex-wife, Susan, comes to visit.

This is because he cheated on Susan in the past, and fears that she came back into his life just to spite him. However, his fear turns out to be unfounded, as Susan simply wants to reconnect with him because of learning about his Parkinson's diagnosis.

Shrinking season 2 sees Paul reconcile with his ex-wife Susan

Paul has been the more professional and by-the-book therapist compared to his maverick protege, Jimmy. Shrinking season 2 has him begin to grow out of his rigid nature thanks to encouragement from Jimmy, and his experience in treating Sean.

However, Paul finds himself in a difficult position when his ex-wife Susan pays him a visit, as he's convinced she still holds a grudge against him and wants to settle the score.

To that end, he uses his lawyer, Brian, to get away from her under the pretense of dealing with legal complications.

Brian comes to realize that Paul is deliberately avoiding Susan, and presses him on the matter. This ends up putting Paul in the position of trying to explain his underlying issues, in a reversal of how things typically go in his profession.

Brian further gets reminded of Paul's problem after getting unnerved during an adoption discussion with his partner, and subsequently confronts Paul as a result. It's at this point that Paul reveals the awkward circumstances, under which his time with his ex-wife ended.

His marriage with Susan had begun deteriorating after Paul's success as a psychologist and author. While he went on speaking tours and expanded his practice, his marriage suffered and he got into a bitter fight with Susan.

Susan would later call him and say she wanted to reconcile with him, not realizing that by this point, Paul had cheated on her with another woman. When Susan found out about this, she took custody of their daughter, Meg, and left him.

The two never reconciled since then, and Paul spent the rest of his life reluctant to ever talk to her again. With Brian's encouragement, however, Paul decides to practice what he preaches and reaches out to Susan.

It's at this point that Susan reveals that she didn't visit Paul to settle a grudge, but because she'd learned of his Parkinson's diagnosis. She wanted to make things right with him before it was too late.

Paul realizes that because he never forgave himself for his infidelity, he assumed she hadn't forgiven him either.

Realizing how mistaken he was, he fully reconciles with Susan, and the two go along with Julie to watch Paul's daughter, Meg, give a presentation.

Shrinking season 2, episode 5 continues the show's trend of humanizing mental health professionals and showing that even they need the occasional need to live up to their values. Shrinking season 2 streams exclusively on Apple TV+.
