Created by Blake Crouch, Apple TV+’s Dark Matter was initially released in May 2024 and has quickly become one of the platform’s most popular sci-fi series. It revolves around Jason Dessen, a gifted physicist working on Dark Matter, as he discovers alternate realities and is eventually kidnapped by one of his counterparts in another reality.
While Dessen’s role is played by the talented Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connely plays Daniela, his wife, as Jason attempts to fight and return to his reality. The official synopsis of the series read:
“A man is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could've lived, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from a most terrifying foe: himself.”
The series has a stellar 7.7 IMDB rating and stars Alice Braga, Jimmi Spimspn, and Dayo Okeniyi. Following the success of the first season, Apple TV+ recently announced that Dark Matter has been renewed for season 2, although no release date or other related details have emerged about the upcoming iteration thus far.
Dark Matter Season 2 set to arrive after Apple TV+ announces renewal
The series is based on Blake Crouch’s novel of the same name. It delves into the never-ending possibilities in the multiverse and notably has a complicated narrative that pits Jason Dessen against his biggest foe, in the form of himself, from an alternate reality.
The series has now been renewed for a season 2, as Blake Crouch, who is also the executive producer and wrote the script, said the following after the announcement:
"Thanks to everyone who tuned in for season one—book fans and new fans—and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicago—you were so good to us."
He continued:
"In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!”
Crouch’s statement suggests that season 2 might not be the final iteration of Dark Matter, as there is plenty more in the story to explore. The showrunner promised that there are a range of developments that will still happen with respect to the narrative, and fans have every reason to be excited.
Season 1 majorly revolved around Jason Dessen’s kidnapping, as he eventually discovered he had been transported to an alternate version of his hometown Chicago. He discovered that the multiverse was filled with unlimited realities, and one of his own versions of another reality had kidnapped him.
The season 1 finale also left fans with a cliffhanger, as Jason was seen traveling to another reality with his family in hopes of escaping his fate. The show received positive responses from both fans and critics, which led to consistent calls about a renewal.
That has now happened, and fans will now be looking forward to the announcement of further details, including, eventually, a release date. Dark Matter season 1 is now available to watch on Apple TV+.
