Shrinking season 3 has officially been confirmed by Apple TV+. The acclaimed comedy series follows the story of Jimmy Laird (played by Jason Segel), a psychotherapist who works at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center. After losing his wife, Tia, in a car accident, he becomes a maverick who gets more drastically involved in his patients' lives.

This approach gives him new insights into his work as a therapist but also leads to several unintended consequences. Jimmy's blurring of professional boundaries is contrasted by the more by-the-book approach of Dr. Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford), Jimmy's mentor and a senior professional at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center who is struggling with Parkinson's disease.

The renewal of Shrinking for season 3 was announced on October 17 at the 2024 New York Comic Con, in a panel that featured Jason Segel, Brett Goldstein, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, Ted McGinley, and Lukita Maxwell.

Shrinking season 3 will begin filming in 2025

In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, published on October 17, Brett Goldstein mentioned that Shrinking season 3 would start filming sometime in 2025. However, pre-production work on the season has already been going on for the past three months, with Goldstein stating:

"We've been writing it for the last three months, so the fact that the announcement came, it was like, ‘Well, thank f*ck we haven’t been wasting all that time."

Shrinking has so far been streaming on Apple TV+ for two seasons with the first one premiering on January 27, 2023, and season 2 premiering on October 16, 2024. The release date for Shrinking season 3 is currently unknown.

The first two seasons follow Jimmy's reinvention as a therapist after his life is uprooted because of his wife's untimely demise. In order to cope with his grief, Jimmy becomes more invested in his work as a therapist and resorts to increasingly maverick methods to help his patients.

Shrinking season 3 will continue to follow Jimmy's story

Jimmy's blurring of professional and personal boundaries ends up having numerous unintended consequences by the time of the season 1 finale. The most notable case of his methods backfiring is in the case of his client, Grace, who pushes her abusive husband off a cliff and is consequently arrested for attempted murder.

Other, more subtle effects of Jimmy's influence are seen in his interactions with Sean, a military veteran who starts seeing Jimmy for his anger management issues. Sean ends up forming a new circle of friends as a result, but most of them are people from Jimmy's social circle, creating a certain conflict of interest that prompts him to switch to Paul as his therapist.

Jimmy also faces further conflicts in his personal life thanks to his relationship with his colleague, Gaby, with whom he begins a casual affair. Season 2 episode 2 of Shrinking establishes that Jimmy knowingly continued the affair even after realizing the unhealthy effect it was having on Gaby, showing a selfish and manipulative side for which she calls him out.

Shrinking season 3 will pick up where season 2 of the show left off. Per an October 15 report by Deadline, Shrinking season 2 will conclude on Christmas, December 25.
