Season 3 of Apple TV Plus's Ted Lasso ended a year ago. Still, fans are waiting if a possible spin-off series for the sports comedy-drama is going to get a green light.
In the third-season finale, titled "So Long, Farewell," Jason Sudeikis's Ted decided that his rightful place was back with his family. So, he returned to the US, and instead of becoming the "highest-paid coach" in the big leagues, he settled in as the new soccer coach of his son's team.
While the finale closed all loose ends in Ted's storyline and gave him a beautiful ending, there wasn't any indication that it was the show's finale. Hence, fans have been waiting for Ted's next chapter, but so far, there aren't any concrete plans for a Ted Lasso spin-off.
However, both execs and some of the show's stars are hopeful that Jason Sudeikis's titular character could soon return to the small screen.
Is there going to be a Ted Lasso spin-off?
Over 12 months after the series ended, a spin-off for the much-loved comedy show about a college football coach who became the head of an English Premier League team for three seasons remains a hot topic.
So far, there are no concrete plans for more Ted Lasso content, but comments from both executives and the Primetime Emmy-winning show have been hopeful.
Warner Bros exec says there are conversations about a Ted Lasso spin-off
Warner Bros Television Group's Chairman and CEO, Channing Dungey, shared a hopeful update on plans to bring Sudeikis's titular character back.
She said during the Banff World Media Festival in June 2024 that she hasn't given up hope of seeing more of the famous football coach in some form. Conversations are happening about it, she said:
"I think Jason Sudeikis is open to the idea, but I think he wants to have the right idea, which I appreciate."
As she puts it, there's a possibility of Sudeikis returning as Ted if they come up with the right script and story. Dungey also mentioned that Apple supports bringing back the show, whether for a fourth season or a spin-off.
Ted Lasso cast members would love to return for a spin-off, except Lasso himself
Warner Bros and Apple aren't the only ones on the pro side of expanding the Ted Lasso universe. Some of the show's cast members also expressed their desire to return to the Apple TV+ comedy show.
Nick Mohammed, who played Nathan Shelley in the show, is open to coming back for a spin-off series, telling Radio Times in May:
"I'd love to do some more at some point, but then, equally, it came to a satisfying conclusion in terms of stories for a lot of them, a lot of the characters."
He also added that he "wouldn't put a period on the end" of a possible spin-off just yet.
With a lot of hopeful comments from both execs and costars of the show, one thing, though, is obvious — Sudeikis holds all the cards when it comes to fans getting more Ted Lasso.
As for his take on the Apple TV show's future, the actor previously told Deadline in March 2023 that Season 3 is "the end of this story that we wanted to tell."
