The Last of Us season 2 is set to premiere in April 2025, and the fanfare for it is growing high. After the successful first season of the show, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey's Joel and Ellie will be returning to the small screens once more. This time, the show will be telling the story from The Last of Us: Part II, as the first season tells the story of the first game.

However, The Last of Us season 2 won't be telling the entire story of the second game due to its scope. The second game is significantly bigger than the first one in a narrative sense, and a lot of the second game will also be adapted for season 3 of the show.

Talking to Deadline in an interview on June 5, 2024, showrunner Craig Mazin explained how the story of the second game will lead into a season 3 of the show—and also possibly a season 4.

“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” revealed Mazin.

He continued:

“We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”

The Last of Us season 2 will be premiering on HBO and Max in April 2025.

The latest The Last of Us season 2 preview teased Abby's role in the story

The Last of Us season 2 will also be seeing the debut of Kaitlyn Dever's Abby. First introduced in The Last of Us: Part II, she is the central antagonist of the story and a major character in it as well. Without spoiling anything, fans can expect her to have quite deadly interactions with Ellie. The preview also teased a scene with Joel.

A lot of The Last of Us season 2's story will be based around the cycle of revenge and exactly how far people will go to get it. It will also be set in Seattle this time around, where two new factions will be introduced that are important to the plot—they are the Washington Liberation Front (W.L.F.) and the Seraphites.

How many episodes will The Last of Us season 2 have?

The upcoming season of the hit HBO series will only feature seven episodes this time around. This will be significantly less than season 1, which had nine episodes. However, in the same interview with Deadline, Craig Mazin did explain the reason why.

“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” said Mazin.

He continued:

“When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
