Joining Netflix’s Geeked Week 2024 announcements, Wolf King has finally dropped the much-anticipated teaser that gives a brief glimpse into the world of Curtis Jobling’s Wereworld. The project was first made public in early June 2022, when not many details were revealed besides disclosing Tom Brass helming the series at the British animation studio, Jellyfish Pictures.

Jellyfish Pictures is the same company that previously worked on Kung Fu Panda 4, Spirit Untamed, How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming, and Trolls World Tour. The studio is also working on Roald Dahl’s The Twits, helmed by Phil Johnston, who is known for being one of the writers for Disney’s Zootopia and Wreck-it-Ralph.

The animated series will be produced by Lime Pictures, Angelo Abela, Time Compton, Barry Quinn, and the novel’s author. Follow along to learn more.

As of now, there is no exact release date for most of the titles announced at Netflix’s Geeked Week 2024. However, it has been revealed that Wolf King will be released in 2025. As stated above, the coming-of-age epic-fantasy adventure is completely based on Curtis Jobling’s Wereworld, which follows Drew Ferran, a 16-year-old boy, who is the last of the werewolves.

Here’s how the official synopsis of the original novel series describes the story:

"Imagine a world ruled by Werelords - men and women who can shift at will into bears, lions, and serpents. When Drew suddenly discovers he's not only a werewolf but the long-lost heir to the murdered Wolf King's throne, he must use his wits and newfound powers to survive in a land suddenly full of enemies."

It further continues:

"Drew's the only one who can unite the kingdom in a massive uprising against its tyrant ruler, Leopold the Lion. But the king is hot on Drew's tail and won't rest until he's got the rebel Wolf's head."

Jobling’s Wereworld was first published by Penguin UK in January 2011 and eventually was shortlisted for Waterstone’s Book Prize. The series ended with six books, with the last one titled “War of the Werelords” published on October 3, 2013.

It was not until June 2024 when Netflix revealed the adaptation’s title “Wolf King” during its Next on Netflix: Animation presentation alongside revealing the release year. The official trailer that was released on September 17, 2024, featured the main characters from the series, hyping the novel audience by giving a glimpse at the amazing adaptation.

While the official cast list for the series is yet to be made public, a few regulars have come to light. Louise Landau, who garnered a lot of praise for his portrayal of Dauphin Francois in The Serpeant Queen will be playing Trent Ferran, described as Drew’s adoptive brother who rules the Leoran clan.

Nina Barker-Francis, who is known for playing Chloe in The Jetty and Chill Spen in Moonhaven, will be voicing Whitley, a sly and intelligent Werefox, who will be an ally to the protagonist on his quest.

Lastly, David Dawson, acclaimed for his role as Robbie Carmen in The Town and Alfred in The Last Kingdom, will voice Count Vega, a cunning and dangerous Wereshark, who is an adversary to Drew.

More details, including the exact release date, complete cast list, episode count, and a full-fledged official trailer for the series can be expected to be revealed by Netflix soon.
