Worst Roommate Ever presented some of the most nightmarish situations a few innocent people faced at the hands of the people they shared a house with. In season 1 episode 3 named 'Marathon Man', Callie Quinn recounts the night when her housemate Youssef Khater assaulted her and attempted to murder her by burying her alive.
Worst Roommate Ever produced by Blumhouse Television has presented some of the most chilling cases of deceit, betrayal and benevolence. The most heartbreaking part about these stories is that the crimes were committed by the people that victims trusted enough to share a living space with.
However, in the case of fake Marathon Man Youssef Khater, the range of victims went beyond the house. In fact, he was a global grifter who scammed many people and attempted to murder one more person, which Worst Roommate Ever left out from the story.
Youssef buried Callie Quinn alive in Worst Roommate Ever
Callie Quinn had always dreamed of living abroad, discovering new places, embracing new cultures and meeting new people, who'd hopefully become her friends. On March 4, 2011, Callie arrived in Santiago, Chile, and got a job at Bridge Linguatec Institute as an English teacher.
She shared a 12-bedroom hostel-like house on Avenida Condell with Edmund Attrill, Sabine Schmidt, Molly Parsons and Youssef Khater, a Danish-Palestinian marathon runner.
Callie was chatty and got along with everyone, except Youssef, who didn't like that she talked so much. Even, she didn't like Youssef and never fully believed his heroic stories as a Denmark Special Forces soldier and marathon runner.
However, as time passed, Callie developed a cordial relationship with Youssef. One night, after spending some time at a bar, Youssef took Callie to a burned-out house to get a golden toilet seat. Callie understood that the toilet seat thing was ridiculous, but she was ready for some adventure.
This adventure turned into a nightmare when Yousseff attacked her from behind, assaulted her and tried to choke her to death. After she became unconscious, he buried her alive and left. But, miraculously, Callie survived and showed up the next day at the fence of the hostel, covered in dirt.
Youssef was released from prison in three months
Callie spent three days in the hospital. In the meantime, Youseff left the hostel saying that his mother had died and disappeared.
The authorities initially dismissed the case as 'two foreigners fighting'. However, a criminal attorney Rocío Berríos, who loved poking the authorities, got involved in the case and helped get Youssef behind bars and deported back to Denmark.
When Youssef was waiting for the trial after being apprehended, he was checked by a psychologist. The doctor reported that he lacked empathy and showed traits of narcissism, paranoia and asocial behavior.
After being extradited to Denmark, where he faced five charges, he spent three months in prison before leaving for Costa Rica. In September 2014, it was reported that Youssef was wanted by the police for stealing $19,000 from a Canadian traveler Marie Taylor. He introduced himself to her as Joseph Carter.
When she learned about his true identity, he tried to kill her by smothering her with a pillow. Thankfully, he failed again, and the single mother of a young child is still alive. Youssef Khater was caught by the authorities but released again. His current whereabouts are unknown.
Worst Roommate Ever premiered on Netflix on March 21, 2022. A second season was released two years later on June 26, 2024.
