Amazon Prime Video has decided to make a new show called Young Sherlock, with eight episodes in its first season. It's a modern twist on the classic detective character from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. The show is based on Andy Lane's book series and follows a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes as he solves his first big case at Oxford University.

Guy Ritchie, who directed the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr., will be in charge of the new series and also be an executive producer. He's teaming up again with Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who was in Ritchie's movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and will now play Sherlock.

The show gives a fresh look at Sherlock, diving into his younger days and showing the things that make him tick before he becomes the brilliant detective everyone adores. There has been no official release date yet, but fans are ready for this series.

How old is Sherlock Holmes in Young Sherlock?

In the new Prime Video show, the protagonist is just 19 years old. They picked this age because it shows Sherlock solving a case during his time at Oxford University before he became the famous detective from the Sherlock Holmes stories. However, the actor playing the 19-year-old Sherlock, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, is 26.

In the original Young Sherlock Holmes book series by Andy Lane that the show is inspired by, the character begins as a 14-year-old. In many other versions, Sherlock Holmes is usually shown as a grown-up detective, like the BBC show Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch, the movies with Robert Downey Jr., and the CBS series Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller.

In the 1985 movie Young Sherlock Holmes, directed by Barry Levinson, a teenage Sherlock is portrayed by Nicholas Rowe when he was just 14 years old. Even though 19 may seem older than the usual depiction in the books, it still gives a glimpse of a much younger Sherlock than fans are used to seeing on screen. Guy Ritchie's upcoming series is set to showcase the detective in his early days.

Who is playing Young Sherlock?

The new Prime Video series Young Sherlock has cast English actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Holmes. Viewers might recognize him from the movie with Idris Elba called Above the Below. The actor has been in the acting game since the early 2010s but made a splash in 2018 with his role in The Silencing with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

He's been in other movies like The Woman King and The Loneliest Boy in the World since then. Fiennes Tiffin and director Guy Ritchie, who's directing the series, have collaborated before on Ritchie's last movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. This series will be Fiennes Tiffin's big break, starring as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes.

Who will direct the Young Sherlock series?

Guy Ritchie, the British filmmaker, will be directing and executive producing Young Sherlock. He is known for directing movies like the Sherlock Holmes films with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, The Gentlemen, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Aladdin.

According to a Variety report dated May 29, 2024, Ritchie said about the upcoming project:

"We're going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they've never imagined before."

He added,

"We're going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love."

Ritchie wants to dig into the iconic character's background and tell a story that will grab viewers' attention.

Fans can expect a twist on Holmes in the new Prime Video series.
