Donald Trump's Twitch account gets unbanned after three years

Former US President Donald Trump's Twitch account has been unbanned after three years. This comes almost a day after Trump accepted the official GOP nomination at the recent RNC. The news was first reported by the StreamerBans bot on X, which tracks suspensions on the Amazon-owned platform.

According to StreamerBans, Trump's channel was banned from Twitch about three years and five months ago. The ban went into effect on January 20, 2021.

The Republican presidential nominee and his team can once again post content on Twitch from today (July 19).

Why was Donald Trump's account banned from Twitch?

The Donald Trump Twitch channel was used by the former President's representatives to broadcast his speeches from rallies. However, it was handed an indefinite ban following the January 6 riots US Capitol in 2021.

As per reports, Twitch officials announced, at the time, that Trump's account was banned as it posed a "risk of further incitement of violence."

This was not the only time that Trump was banned from Twitch, with his account getting suspended back in 2020 for "hateful conduct" and going against the platform's community guidelines. However, it was reinstated shortly afterward following widespread online backlash.

Rod Breslau, a gaming and esports journalist under the alias Slasher, said Twitch gave him a statement about reinstating Donald Trump's account on July 19. It seems that the decision has to do with the fact that Trump was recently given the Republican Presidential nomination.

A part of the statement reads:

"We believe there is value in hearing from Presidential nominees directly, when possible. Trump is now the official Republican nominee for US President."

Breslau also noted that the spokesperson from Twitch insisted that Trump's account will be subject to the same community guidelines and terms of service going forward.
