Twitch star Asmongold has retracted his earlier comment about Mexican content creator Samantha Rivers, the Streamer of the Year winner at the 2024 Esports Awards, during one of his recent broadcasts. The OTK co-founder has been trying to make amends since he got banned for two weeks earlier this month.
Since his return, Asmongold has been reflecting on his past remarks about the streaming community and popular culture. This includes his comment about Samantha Rivers being a diversity pick after she was named the Streamer of the Year for the second consecutive time at the 2024 Esports Awards.
He said:
"When I put out the thing about that girl winning the Streamer of the Year thing, I think her name was Rivers, I was totally an a**hole about that, I was completely wrong. I was a massive di**head, I should have never said that."
When some viewes challenged his statement, the streamer doubled down, acknowledging that what he said was wrong:
"No it was, if you look back I was."
What Asmongold said about Samantha Rivers winning Streamer of the Year at 2024 Esports Awards
Asmongold was banned for two weeks on October 15, 2024, after making controversial remarks about Palestine and Gaza. Since then, he has been apologetic for his past controversies.
In a YouTube video released after the Twitch ban went into effect, Asmongold said he would reduce negativity on his streams and acknowledged that he had let people down.
In addition to stepping down from leadership positions to focus on his regular streams, Asmongold has been highlighting past statements he no longer stands by. In his recent stream, he admitted that his comment about Samantha Rivers after she won the Streamer of the Year award were wrong.
For those who are unaware, Rivers' win at the 2024 Esports Awards sparked a lot of backlash, especially from the English-speaking streaming community, with many believing IShowSpeed or Kai Cenat would have been better choices. However, the award was based solely on fan votes.
Asmongold was one of those critical of Rivers' win, claiming she won because she was a woman. In a Twitch clip from August, he can be heard saying:
"I'm salty that it was obviously a diversity pick because she's a woman and everybody knows it. It should have been Speed or Kai or CaseOh or like three other people. Everybody knows it. It's f**king obnoxious. You put her up there 'cause she's a female. It's embarrassing, and it's patronizing. It's not even a top female streamer, either. It's bullsh**."
In related news, Asmongold recently commented on Destiny's permanent ban on Twitch after his two-week suspension was lifted. He suggested that the platform had a vendetta against the streamer.
