Fiona "Fanfan" recently took to social media to defend her close Twitch associate, Emily "ExtraEmily," amid significant backlash over the latter's statement that she did not intend to repay her parents for covering her $170,000 college tuition. In an X post, Fiona shared her struggles, related them to Emily's current situation, and defended her against the backlash she's been receiving.
Essentially, while ExtraEmily was on an IRL stream with Texas-based streamers Nmplol and MisterArther, she said, "I don't want to," after Nmplol suggested she pay her parents back for her college degree since she turned out to be a streamer:
"I'm never gonna pay it back though, I don't want to... My parents paid and they were like 'pay us back for college' and I just like, don't want to... they don't need it."
In the post, Fanfan noted that her mother, who paid her tuition, occasionally jokes about being reimbursed, but emphasized that their family dynamic allows for such lighthearted comments:
"I’m in the same boat as her, so if you’re still mad at Emily, you can be mad at me too. my mom paid my college tuition, we have a super close relationship, and she makes the same 'pay me back for my wasted money' jokes... Ask yourself who knows them better: A stranger who saw some clips online, or someone who’s spent their entire life with them since birth?"
Fanfan claims that ExtraEmily's comments about her family are part of her "on-stream persona"
Fanfan expressed that Emily's way of showing gratitude towards her parents was through covering expenses such as vacations and other practical needs, showcasing a different but equally supportive approach:
"Like Emily, I will not be paying my mom back. instead, I pay for her mortgage, bills, food, flights, and my brother’s college tuition. Similarly, Emily prefers helping her parents out the same way or treating them to vacations."
That said, the streamer did not defend ExtraEmily entirely. She criticized the need for Emily to divulge personal details to justify her comments, pointing out that the backlash arose from misinterpretations of a lighthearted statement consistent with Emily’s on-stream persona:
"She shouldn’t have to publicly offer up this information to defend herself. She was clearly just making a lighthearted comment that is technically true and fits her on-stream persona."
Fanfan concluded by encouraging critics to focus on their own family dynamics instead of judging others:
"I’d be lucky if my future daughter takes care of me the way Emily does hers. Some of you need to worry about yourselves and your own parents first."
It should be noted that ExtraEmily is a Financial Engineering graduate from Columbia University, a popular Ivy League college, and in 2024 she gained popularity for her impressive feat of memorizing and reciting over 1,000 digits of Pi.
