Twitch's resident psychiatrist Dr. K (real name Alok Kanojia M.D) has addressed the medical license reprimand issued to him by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine due to interactions with late streamer Byron "Reckful" Bernstein. The news has been of some interest to the streaming community, considering Reckful took his own life on January 2, 2020.
On July 24, 2024, reports about Dr. K getting a medical license reprimand for undermining "public confidence in the integrity of the medical profession" went viral on social media.
On his latest Twitch broadcast, Dr. K addressed the medical license reprimand, claiming that he does not blame people for thinking ill of him because patient files and other confidential information are not available to the public:
"I don't even blame people for thinking negatively about me, right? Because you guys don't have all the information, you can't ever get all the information, I can't give you the information. It's just not possible. And that's okay, it's part of what being a content creator is."
He also called the reprimand a "healthy process":
"So I think this is an incredibly healthy process, this is what oversight looks like."
Dr. K talks about being relieved in the wake of the medical board decision regarding his conversation with Reckful
Dr. K runs the HealthyGamer_GG channel on Twitch, where he promotes mental health awareness specifically targeted towards video gamers and content creators. He frequently collaborates with fellow streamers to talk about their mental health.
Dr. K's reprimand was reportedly due to his interaction with Reckful on his livestream in December 2019. According to a statement from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, this jeopardized the patient-doctor relationship between the two, with the doctor himself noting that it was irresponsible.
During his most recent stream on the HealthyGamer_GG channel on Twitch, the psychiatrist noted that the allegations being brought against him could not be addressed in the public forum due to the sensitive information involved, claiming that it would violate people's privacy:
"One of the challenges of the situation is that, because someone has a right to privacy, I cannot share everything about the situation. People made allegations and in order to defend myself, I had to violate someone's privacy. And I am not going to do that, I will never do that."
He added that he was relieved the medical board had weighed in on the issue:
"The good news, the relieving thing for me is that with the medical board, the right to privacy because they are a medical board, they reviewed a lot of records. They can look at patient information and they are allowed to make a determination after they have looked through all of the information."
As it appears, Dr. K seems content with how the situation has turned out.
