YouTube streamer Darren "IShowSpeed" has been known to display athletic feats online. From running around on stream to quite literally jumping over cars, energy and activity are core tenets of his brand and personality. This sporty theme has led him to collaborations with high-profile athletes from different backgrounds, including Olympic athletes like Noah Lyles and football legends like Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
On October 8, 2024, Speed challenged himself to break a world record: 1,000 backflips in 24 hours. The streamer made steady progress, but fatigue got to him after a certain point, and he had to retire after completing 660 flips. After this, Olympic medalist Frederick "Flips" Richard reacted to Speed's attempt and offered coaching to improve his form.
Over a month later, on November 13, IShowSpeed and Frederick finally collaborated on the streamer's YouTube channel in a broadcast titled NOT ENDING UNTIL I LAND A DOUBLE BACKFLIP. In the stream, Speed jumped over a stack of boxes six feet high.
First, Richard demonstrated the technique with practiced precision, setting a high bar. When IShowSpeed attempted it next, his raw energy was unmistakable, and to everyone's surprise, he managed to clear the stack of boxes on his first try. The Olympian reacted, impressed with Speed's capability:
"Okay! I'm impressed ('Chat, he cannot jump higher than me', said IShowSpeed) I can jump higher."
IShowSpeed lands a double backflip after practicing with Olympian Frederick Richard
In his October world-record attempt, Speed announced he could no longer continue, after roughly 19 hours of flips. His fans, drawn to his dynamic and unpredictable content, were both disappointed and impressed, with the streamer vowing to train and try again in the future.
As part of this training process, he began working with Frederick Richard to land a double backflip. In his latest stream, Speed managed to pull the stunt off after a bit of practice:
"I f**king did it! Let's go! I get it now, I can do it again. Double backflip! that's the first step though chat, stream not over yet."
However, Speed used a trampoline as an assist. His ultimate objective is to launch from elevated flat ground, flip two times mid-air, and land in a foam pit. As of this writing, the streamer has yet to pull through with a clean double backflip, mainly because he has cold feet. Fans can hopefully expect Speed to achieve his final goal after gaining a bit of confidence.
In other news, Noah Lyles narrowly edged out IShowSpeed in a 50-meter sprint during MrBeast's $100,000 challenge.
