At the Venice Film Festival American director Harmony Korine claimed that Hollywood is crumbling because it is losing talented individuals like IShowSpeed and Kai Cenat to livestreaming. The director even went on to compare the former streamer to the legendary soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.
While talking at a press conference in Venice, Harmony Korine criticized Hollywood for not recognizing the value of new talent and went on to state that the film industry is on the brink of creative collapse because people such as Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed are not a part of it:
"Because what's happening in Hollywood and you're starting to see Hollywood crumble, I think creatively, is that they are losing a lot of talented and creative minds to gaming and to streamers. Like, IShowSpeed is a movie, Kai Cenat is a movie."
Towards the end of the segment of his speech, Korine proceeded to state that IShowSpeed is the new Tarkovsky:
"But IShowSpeed is, you know, the new Tarkovsky."
Harmony Korine says Hollywood movies will stagnate unless they attract talent like Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed
Harmony Korine has already done a collaboration with Twitch streaming sensation Kai Cenat, filming him as part of the 2024 Marc Jacobs Fall Collection lineup along with the likes of Cardi B and Lil Uzi Vert.
While discussing the state of Hollywood, the director recognized the need for young talents like Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed in the industry, claiming that the conventions of film have pushed away people, like the streamers who have found their creative outlets elsewhere:
"But really, they are so locked in on convention and then all of those kids that are so creative are going to find other outlets and go other places. Because movies are no longer the dominant art form. Always they were the dominant art form but nothing is linear anymore."
Harmony Korine alleged that movies are no longer the dominant art form, and without the influx of creative individuals who have taken up pursuits like livestreaming, films will stagnate:
"So they are going to start to lose all the talent to all these other places and film is going to, not all film, but a lot of film will just stagnate and be just huge IP or just be this rarefied experience."
Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed are perhaps the most popular American livestreamers at the moment, having bagged second and third places in the Streamer of the Year Award category at the 2024 Esports Awards where they were beaten by the Mexican streamer Samantha Rivers.
Recently, the duo went viral in the streaming community for their marathon Minecraft stream on Twitch and YouTube, pulling in hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers from all over the world.
