Tech YouTuber and content creator Linus Sebastian, aka Linus Tech Tips, has responded to criticism by tech YouTuber Stephen "Gamers Nexus." For those unaware, Gamers Nexus uploaded (January 15, 2025) an investigative video on the ongoing Honey scam allegations and revealed that he had sued them.

At the 17-minute mark, Gamers Nexus criticized Linus for not discussing the Honey situation despite their knowledge of it years ago. He highlighted a short clip of Linus talking about Honey, suggesting he did not make a video about the drama when they knew about the alleged scam due to potential backlash.

Linux Tech Tips has responded to the criticism and labeled Gamers Nexus' argument "disingenuous." He said:

"Even if we ignore how disingenuous it is to compare the climate today, what we know today, to the climate years ago, when we originally dropped our Honey sponsorship, court regular viewers will know that we provided additional context that dramatically changes the meaning of that (shown by Gamers Nexus) quote."

The “context” Linus is referring to is what he explained during his January 4 stream. He clarified that, despite being aware of the alleged Honey scam, he chose not to make a video about it. This was because there was limited information available, and it could have appeared that he was urging people to uninstall the Honey extension simply because he wasn't earning money from it. He said this (from his January 4 stream):

“If I told everybody, ‘Uninstall Honey!’, an extension that supposedly gets them a better deal because I wasn’t making enough money from it? Do you really, honestly — ask yourself truly — think that would have gone well for me?”

Linus Tech Tips has addressed Gamers Nexus' criticism, stating that their investigative journalism approach is flawed because they did contact Linus for a comment (right to reply) before publishing.

He described this as not in line with journalistic standards and labeled them as "unethical, un-journalistic flaws," adding:

"In a nutshell, Steve spent about 20 minutes rationalizing that decades of best journalistic practices around the right to reply simply don't apply to him."

Linus also sent Gamers Nexus an email before uploading his latest WAN Show, giving them a heads-up about the topics he would address and his response to their criticism. Gamers Nexus later shared a screenshot of the email. In one section, Linus wrote:

"Everyone is human, and we all make mistakes, but I believe that for you to become the journalist you aspire to be, there are some errors in both your approach and in your coverage that are large enough to merit correction."

In other news, Honey is currently facing lawsuits from both Legal Eagle and Gamers Nexus over an alleged scam. Linus Tech Tips, however, has announced that they will not be participating in any such legal proceedings.
