Twitch creator Matthew "Mizkif" took to YouTube to describe the extent of loss he had incurred as a result of poor sales of his newly launched game, Unrooted. The streamer stated that the game was in development for four and a half years, but ended up selling only 3,000 copies on Steam since its launch on August 2, 2024.

Overall, the cost of producing the game had set him back by more than $302,000. Mizkif stated that the $290,000 is the net loss he has incurred so far, even after considering the profit he earned from the sold copies.

Matthew "Mizkif" conceived the idea of making a two-dimensional platformer game with a specific focus on high difficulty while visiting the Central American country of Belize back in 2021. The game had been under construction since then, with its developers spending over 55 months on the game.

Delving into the reasons why he believed the game has not performed well so far since its launch earlier this month, Mizkif stated that the focus of the game market has shifted from two-dimensional platformers to third-dimensional ones, with games such as Chained Together becoming extremely popular in the past few months.

The OTK member also stated that the difficulty of the game may have acted as a deterrent to players. Despite his wanting to retain this specific aspect of the game, after considering the reviews of the game and player feedback, Mizkif decided to add checkpoints in the game to improve playability. He stated:

"I've been very against checkpoints because Ilbelieve it makes the game, you know, not as exciting when you hit those marks... but I think it's a necessary evil. So, my team is adding checkpoints to the game, and they should be in very shortly."

He also complimented his developers for the game's design and art style:

"I am extremely proud of my team that worked on this, and I don't want people to assume that I am disappointed in what their work was. They have done an amazing job."

After a brief hiatus starting on August 5, 2024, Mizkif put up a post on X on August 16, 2024, stating that he would be returning to streaming very soon. The streamer had originally taken the hiatus after feeling "overwhelmed" and being disappointed with his content. Mizkif has now said that he will hold a broadcast next on August 20, 2024.
