Popular streamer Jason "Thor," better known as "Pirate Software," has called out Twitch for allegedly using generative AI to develop one of its global emotes. In a one-minute-six-second video posted on X, Pirate Software analyzed the recently released Twitch emote, Cat in the Chat, to explain that it contained "hallmarks" of generative AI.
Here's what the emote looks like:

While claiming that the cat in the emote had its tongue "melting" into its teeth, the Streamer of the Year 2024 nominee remarked:
"So, Twitch put this out, and they said, 'If you thought a holiday hoopla was over, think again.' And, if we look at this image, and if we actually look at it closely, I want to show you a couple of things with this that are hallmarks of generative AI. The tongue melts into the teeth. This is not a structure that's on an actual cat. The eyes, actually, have copy-pasted the reflection between those two. The ear is part of the hat over here. It melds into the hat."
Pirate Software asserted that the Cat in the Chat emote was generated using artificial intelligence:
"This is AI-generated. Hands down, this is a generative AI image that Twitch is now using as an emote on the platform as a global emote."
Pirate Software says he's "deeply disappointed" that Twitch allegedly used AI to develop a global emote
After accusing Twitch of using AI to create the Cat in the Chat global emote, Pirate Software read his X post from December 8, 2024, in which he had written, "Generative AI gives a worse product and makes you look like a clown."
He went on to say that live viewers would automatically be timed out in his Twitch chat for using the emote, adding that he was "deeply disappointed" in Twitch:
"I have now set up NightBot to automatically timeout anybody who uses this in the chat. I won't allow it in the community. I am deeply disappointed in Twitch for doing this. You know better, don't be a dumba**! I don't know what the hell they're thinking."
Furthermore, the former Blizzard Entertainment employee claimed that the livestreaming platform would "alienate" the artist community due to the alleged use of AI:
"This is the dumbest move they could possibly make here. You're going to alienate the whole part of your community, which is the art community, that helps make this platform work. Stop it!"
Gaming streamer Ben "CohhCarnage" also commented on the controversy, wondering if Twitch "seriously used AI" to produce the global emote.
