Twitch star Imane "Pokimane" Anys revealed her PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) diagnosis on a recent episode of the Just Trish podcast. She disclosed that she was diagnosed with the condition in her mid-20s despite having troubles with her menstruation cycle almost all her life.
Podcast host Trisha Paytas first mentioned Pokimane's PCOS diagnosis by noting that the streamer had to change her diet because of it. Apparently, this is what led the content creator to launch her own brand of healthy cookies last year, which caused quite some controversy in the streaming community.
Trisha said:
"When we were talking in the DMs we were talking about this that you have had a PCOS diagnosis that no one knows about. So that made you start this health journey and that led you to making healthy cookies. So were they like cut out everything in your diet?"
Pokimane stated that she had never spoken about her PCOS diagnosis before. She then highlighted the fact that doctors diagnosed her late:
"I have never spoken about this publicly, 'cus I was diagnosed a year or two ago but I have had irregular periods my whole life. And I have been talking to doctors about it my whole life, and it's crazy to me that it was only until I was like in my mid 20s that a doctor could say, 'Oh, it's actually because you have PCOS.'"
Pokimane reveals she has the same gynecologist as Rihanna and that she did not get her periods for an entire college year
According to May Clinic, polycystic ovary syndrome is a common hormonal issue that may interfere with regular periods and can cause complications in one's ovary. Despite hiding her condition for a few years, Pokimane recently talked about it on the Just Trish podcast and even mentioned the fact that she and popular singer Rihanna share the same gynecologist:
"Sidenote, I have the same gynecologist as Rihanna."
Trisha Paytas was quite impressed with this tidbit. After a few exchanges, Pokimane explained that PCOS can have numerous symptoms:
"There's like a range of symptoms that it can or can be."
After being asked how the condition is diagnosed, Pokimane clarified:
"In the past people would only diagnose it if you struggled with really severe symptoms that can occur. Like, if you are overweight, if you have acne, hair loss, or too much hair gain. Like things that can happen when you have a hormonal imbalance."
The Twitch streamer made it clear that those suffering from PCOS can also have a fewer symptoms:
"But the truth of it is that, yes you can have those symptoms. But you can have a wide range of symptoms, you can have none of those symptoms and just have irregular periods."
Pokimane then talked about how PCOS affects her, revealing that she is very sensitive and needs to take specific care not to disrupt her periods:
"The way that I like to describe it is, essentially I am hormonally sensitive. Like, if I am not taking really, really super specific care of my body, I am just not going to get my period. My first year of engineering, like, my first entire year when I was 18-19, I did not get my periods once!"
Pokimane remains one of the top female streamers on Twitch and has over nine million followers on the Amazon-owned platform. She has been in the industry a long time, having started her career back in 2013. Her top streamed video games are Valorant, League of Legends, and Fortnite.
