Twitch streamer Samantha Rivers, also known as rivers_gg, has taken to X to address some of the backlash she has been receiving from other creators as well as the online community following her win at the Esports Awards 2024. To those unaware, Samantha Rivers won the Streamer of the Year award against many other major streamers, including Kai Cenat, Darren "IShowSpeed", Nicholas "Jynxzi", Ibai, Cody "Clix," Case "CaseOh, and Félix "xQc".
In her post, made on X on August 27, 2024, she claimed that following her recent win at the awards, she has been receiving "death threats" and messages of "hate and harassment". The Mexican streamer also provided an English version of her original post, which stated:
"The hate, harassment and death threats I’ve been getting in the past few days is not normal."
"Shocked and scared at how mean people can be": Samantha Rivers addresses hate messages following her winning the Streamer of the Year award
Samantha Rivers has been creating much buzz within the streaming community following the Esports Awards, with creators like Twitch streamer Zack "Asmongold" and Kick creator Adin Ross criticizing her win. Asmongold went as far as to label her as a "diversity pick", claiming that she had only won on account of her being a woman.
On the other hand, Adin Ross dismissed the event entirely, stating that "nobody" knew who Rivers was and that award shows mean "nothing". Addressing these and other such remarks regarding her win, Rivers claimed that she had won due to her community voting for her diligently. Further, she also added that her community often helps her in winning against other "huge profiles":
"This was an award that is won by voting, my community is known for always winning against huge profiles, its what they do. I asked them to please not vote for me in a tweet a while ago, I wrote it honestly and you can find it in my profile."
She also expressed her feelings of anxiety after reading all the comments that were being made about her. She even apologized to Kai and IShowSpeed's fanbases, and stated that she had "nothing to do" with the event going the way it did:
"I’m shocked and scared at how mean people can be to someone they don’t know what they’ve done at all and don’t even speak their language without having any care about how they would feel about everything... I’m sorry to Kai and Speeds communities but I had nothing to do with this... In my 4 years of being on the internet, I had never experienced nothing like this and I hope no one has to go through this ever."
Samantha Rivers is no small player in the Twitch community, with a massive following of over 6.3 million on the platform and currently the third most-followed female streamer overall. Her rise to fame came within a relatively short span of a few years, with her starting streaming in 2021.
