NFL professional team San Francisco 49ers have cut ties with YouTube streamer Herschel "Dr Disrespect" after the creator made a lengthy post on X addressing the controversy regarding him having messaged a minor. Within the post, the streamer effectively admitted to interacting with a minor in 2017 using Twitch Whisper.
This admission was in line with the original allegation made by Twitch ex-staff Cody Conners, who cited the content creator's communication with the minor as the reason behind his previously unexplained ban from the purple streaming platform. The uproar after this post has been tremendous, with other content creators also speaking out regarding the situation.
Dr Disrespect has been a long-time fan of the 49ers and represented the team at some events as well as online in social media posts in 2022 and 2023. He was the one who announced the team's third-round pick during the 2022 NFL Draft.
Further, he also made an appearance in the foghorn ceremony before the kick-off of the match between the 49ers and the Seahawks in 2023. Now, the team has cut its ties with him.
San Francisco 49ers will no longer work with Dr Disrespect amid recent controversy
Herschel has come under fire after his post confirmed the original allegation made against him. He stated within the post that although the conversations between him and the minor were "casual" and "mutual," he said they leaned into "the direction of being inappropriate."
The reactions by netizens also heavily commented on the edits that the streamer had made to the original X post, wherein he'd initially removed the word "minor" and then reinstated it in a subsequent edit. However, he also denounced the usage of the labels "predator" or "p*dophile" by online users for him and also called them "exaggerations."
The creator has various posts on his own Instagram handle depicting him at various venues of the 49ers' match-ups. In them, he can be seen wearing the team's jerseys and posing alongside its members.
The 49ers are not the only organization to cut ties with the Doc. Midnight Society, a game studio that Dr Disrespect co-founded also did the same following the massive backlash after the allegation.
This was acknowledged by Dr Disrespect in his post, wherein he claimed it was a mutual decision as he did not want to "jeopardize" the studio's reputation.
Contentious Twitch streamer Nadia also recently came out with her own take regarding the matter, where she actively denounced those who were "defending" Herschel amid the controversy. In a follow-up post, she talked about the backlash her original post had gotten, addressing the criticism she was receiving for standing up against "p*dophilia."
