Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., a.k.a. DDG, says he would advise his younger self not to get into a relationship amid his breakup with Halle Bailey. In his interview on No Ordinary Podcast on Thursday, October 3, 2024, the YouTuber explained having a relationship takes away from the focus that would otherwise go to one's career.
"If I could tell myself something at age 22, I would tell myself not to get into a relationship because it’s damn near like having a part time job. You really have to apply a lot of time and effort," DDG said.
As news of the YouTuber's comments spread, internet users called him out. One called him "insecure."
Many criticized DDG, saying it was Bailey's career that was impacted by their relationship.
"This is hilarious cause shawty was making time for him while filming a whole Disney movie and he acting like it’s hard to balance a relationship b/c of his YouTube channel lmfaooo spare me" one commented.
"The only career impacted was HALLE’S, ddg thrived when he started dating Halle, including him shoving a camera in that baby faces for content!" a fan stated.
"Imma need Haile Bailey to release 5 movies, 2 mixtapes and 1 album in 2025 to prove him right!" @machkaya added.
Meanwhile, some sympathized with the YouTuber.
"I didn't hear what he had to say. But I definitely understand how a long lasting, loving relationship, can have you lose sight on your own goals and your sense of self. It's hard to explain if you haven't experienced, but losing yourself in a unit means you lose yourself," one sympathized.
"Your career isn’t growing because you’re a terrible rapper not because of Halle," another wrote.
"Comparing yourself to other n**gas though is not the way to grow either. It's always gone be someone better than you that part don't make sense to me, idk... Like why do other n** gas gotta be y'all standards it's nothing you actually want and desire out of yourself?" @harajayku commented.
DDG announced his split with his girlfriend and baby mamma, Halle Bailey, on October 3
On October 3, 2024, DDG took to his Instagram stories to announce that he and Halle Bailey had decided to separate.
"This decision was not easy, but we believe it’s the best path forward for both of us. I cherish the time we’ve spent together and the love we shared," he wrote.
He added that he and Halle would remain close, saying their "love for each other remains deep and true." He also shared that they would co-parent their son, Halo, who was born in January 2024.
The former couple first sparked breakup rumors earlier this year when they unfollowed each other on Instagram (April 2024). The pair also attended Coachella separately.
The Little Mermaid actress and DDG were first linked in January 2022 when they were spotted attending Usher's concert. Since then, the pair has appeared in several public events, including the 2022 BET Awards, the Oscars 2023, and Bailey's film premiers.
In February 2023, fans speculated if the pair split after DDG's former girlfriend, Ruby Rose, tweeted about seeing her ex's new girlfriend wear her clothes. Despite not mentioning either of the personalities, netizens believed she was referencing Bailey as she shared an IG post in a black and white tee Rose had worn in 2020.
At the time, the YouTuber unfollowed Bailey and shared an X post saying, "All these girls the same, ain’t no way." He later clarified he did not cheat.
In July 2023, a couple of months after the actress completed her promotion for The Little Mermaid, DDG dropped his song Famous, where he rapped:
"Filmin’ a movie now you kissing dudes / You know I love you a lot / I don’t give a f**k if that sh*t for promo / I don’t wanna see this sh*t no more / Why is y’all holdin’ hands in the photo? / You know I’m insecure, that’s a no-no."
During the press tour, Bailey and co-star Jonah Hauer-King, who played Prince Eric to her Ariel, held hands at the Disney film's London premiere. The YouTuber continued:
"Fall in love, I hate that sh*t / Knockin’ me off my grind, I can’t f**k with relationships/ I ain’t even got enough time in a day for me to chase a b*tch / I don’t even ask for much, I ask you to do the basic sh*t / Hardest thing I did was fall in love with a famous b*tch."
Fans slammed the lyrics as misogynistic and called DDG "insecure."
Halle, for her part, has not commented on their separation. She will be next seen in a coming-of-age musical co-produced by Pharrell Williams, Atlantis.
