Lil Tay is currently recovering from open heart surgery after her cardiac tumor diagnosis as per her official social media team. However, the news has been met with a lot of skepticism from netizens due to last year's hoax, when her official Instagram account claimed that the singer had passed away.
While Lil Tay later claimed that her estranged father perpetrated the hoax, many on social media now remain unconvinced of her current health crisis. Currently, there are people even claiming that the cardiac tumor was a publicity stunt. This has happened despite numerous photos of Tay in a hospital bed and a supposed echo of her heart with a so-called "bubble" going viral on websites like X.
On September 16, 2024, the Canadian Internet personality's official account on X called out these accusations, claiming that Lil Tay's health has been their priority. The statement also blamed her father for ruining her reputation with the earlier hoax about her death:
"Tay’s health has always been our priority, not popularity or money. The false Death Hoax, started by her misogynistic father to ruin her reputation, is now being projected onto her."
"This is victim blaming": Lil Tay's X account claps back at accusations of faking her heart tumor and open-heart surgery
For those unaware, in August 2023, a post from Lil Tay's Instagram went viral after claiming that the YouTuber-turned-singer had passed away. The news came as quite a shock to her fans. But while tributes and condolences poured in, the internet personality herself debunked the news.
Later, she would claim that her father had manipulated the situation to make a quick buck and apologized for confusing her community. Hence, when her official accounts on X and Instagram shared that Lil Tay had been diagnosed with a heart tumor earlier this month (September), many chose to disregard the news.
Tay's account has recently replied to a post by X user @Junosabs who insinuated that the heart tumor news was a stunt to boost sales for her upcoming single- Growing Up. The singer's social media team pushed back against these accusations, stating that if publicity was their goal, Lil Tay would not have been absent from the internet for over a year:
"The accusations that Tay’s health crisis is for publicity are false and disgusting. If publicity or money were our goal, she would not have gone MIA for over a year. Instead, she would have posted everyday to her millions of fans, and done PR runs like every other celebrity and dropped music every month."
The account also blamed her father for ruining her credibility, insinuating that the death hoax from last year had tainted her reputation. According to the post, blaming Lil Tay while she was in the ICU recovering from open-heart surgery amounts to victim blaming:
"This is blatant victim blaming and rooted in misogyny. Tay deserves support, not harmful accusations."
Tay's social media accounts have been posting photos from the ICU since they announced that the open-heart surgery for a cardiac tumor was a success. During this, many fans have expressed their concern for her well-being as well.
