Tech reviewer and YouTuber Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD has announced his latest project - Panels, a mobile application for wallpapers. The app is currently available on both Android and iOS devices. The YouTuber also announced that the artwork used in the app is submitted by real artists and is handpicked by his team. He announced:
"I'm so pumped to be launching this app! People have asked where I get wallpapers forever, so this is the answer, now and forever: Panels!"
The comments, however, have been mixed. Some have expressed displeasure with the optional yearly subscription plan. One user wrote:
"$50/yr for WALLPAPERS?! And not a single high-res wallpaper downloadable for free with ads? Love team MKBHD and all, but that’s crazy," said @NevInsights
Another user wrote that they could choose AI-made wallpapers for free:
"It feels a little late now, doesn’t it? What’s stopping me from asking AI to create a unique, high-quality wallpaper that no one else will have?" said @HahaluaStudios
Not all comments have been critical, of course. Some individuals congratulated the YouTuber:
"This is exciting! Congrats! Awesome to feature real artists," said @SnazzyLabs
Another said:
"Launching on iOS and Android at the same time is ELITE," said @laptop_lasane
Not the first time Marques Brownlee has garnered the internet's attention
Marques Brownlee is undoubtedly one of the most recognized tech creators on the internet. He is generally seen as a positive individual, but there have been a few instances in the past that sparked some drama online.
For example, earlier this year in April 2024, MKBHD reviewed the highly anticipated Humane AI Pin and labeled it the "worst product" he had ever reviewed. This sparked considerable controversy online, with some people claiming that his criticism was harsh and damaging to a new product.
His wallpaper project also appears to be facing similar issues, as many netizens have expressed concerns about the pricing and raised alarms about the app potentially tracking user data.
Marques Brownlee has addressed several of these complaints, including the app's request for permissions, stating that he would look into it. Another concern was regarding the use of AI, to which he replied that this app is intended for those who prefer art created by actual people rather than AI-generated content.
