Twitch and Kick streamer Felix "xQc" has shared his thoughts on tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee's contentious wallpaper app, Panels. For those unaware, on September 24, 2024, Brownlee took to X to announce the launch of his new venture. The Maplewood, New Jersey native posted:
"I'm so pumped to be launching this app! People have asked where I get wallpapers forever, so this is the answer, now and forever: Panels!"
However, netizens were not pleased when they discovered that the wallpaper application requires a monthly subscription, with an annual plan costing $50.
During a livestream on the same day (September 24, 2024), xQc discovered a post from X user @concept_central, stating that they had "lost a bit of respect" for Marques Brownlee. The netizen wrote:
"I'll be honest, I just lost a bit of respect for Marques. Immediately asks to track app activity. Also tracks location. Has terrible design and animations. Ads are absolutely everywhere. $50/yr subscription," wrote X user @concept_central.
Commenting on Brownlee's wallpaper app, xQc remarked:
"What?! Guys, an app for wallpapers? Chat, what year is this? 'It's just wallpapers, not that deep.' But isn't wallpapers, like, I think they're everywhere, like, for free. Like, a wallpaper you like, you can literally just type it on Google or look in the comments, and it's right there! It's a picture."
Furthermore, the former Overwatch pro referred to the content creator's venture as "garbage":
"I mean, yeah, it's dog s**t. I mean, it is what it is. Yeah, it's dog s**t. I don't know what to tell you. I'm not trying to be rude, chat, but guys, I usually don't hate on the bag and people making sponsors or whatever. But I've got to be honest with you - this is absolute dog s**t! It's just garbage. I don't know what to tell you."
Marques Brownlee responds to backlash over his $50 per year wallpaper app
On September 24, 2024, Marques Brownlee responded to backlash over Panels. While claiming that launching the venture was "exactly like publishing a YouTube video," the 30-year-old assured that the "excessive data disclosures" required for the wallpaper application would be addressed "first thing."
Brownlee then addressed the backlash over Panels' $50 per year pricing, stating that it was their "personal challenge to work to deliver that kind of value" for the app's premium version. He also said he would be "dialing back ad frequency" for the free version.
