Twitch streamer Zack "Asmongold" has commented on multiple subreddits that have banned links to X following Elon Musk's controversial gesture at Donald Trump's inauguration. During a livestream on January 22, 2024, he came across the official World of Warcraft subreddit's announcement to ban all links and screenshots from X.
The subreddit's moderator wrote:
"After lengthy discussion the moderation team have decided to align with other subreddits and disallow all links and images from Twitter/X. Recent political events mean that many moderation teams including ourselves cannot in good conscience provide a platform for this website. We no longer consider it a reliable source of news or information and do not want to support the company in any way. EDIT: For clarity, 'images' includes screenshots of tweets."
According to the streamer, the WoW subreddit team made a "problematic" decision:
"So, you're disallowing links and images? So, you can't even show a screenshot of a tweet. I think this is problematic. I think that a lot of the moderators on Reddit think that the subreddits that they're moderators for are their own personal armies to go after whatever problem they see. And I think that it's alienating for a lot of average people to see that."
Asmongold also reviewed Animal Crossing's official subreddit announcement, which stated that they, too, had banned links from X. While claiming that people were "trying to inject politics" into the forum by discussing whether or not Elon Musk did a "Nazi salute," the co-founder of One True King (OTK) remarked:
"'They ruin everything, right?' Yeah. These people are trying to inject politics into everything. And so, that's it."
"The most distilled, emotionally unstable group of people" - Asmongold says Redditors are "hyper-fixated" on different issues
At the 19-minute mark of the livestream, Asmongold stated that Reddit is a social media platform comprised of a "distilled" and "emotionally unstable" group of people. He elaborated:
"I think that Reddit is one of the last platforms where people do care because everybody who doesn't cares has been systematically removed. That's kind of like what happens. So, you have the most distilled, emotionally unstable group of people on Reddit that are hyper-fixated on these different issues, and they're the ones that are really trying to push policy changes and push things to happen on these different platforms. That's basically what happened."
