In an X post dated January 6, 2025, Twitch streamer ExtraEmily announced that she has paid back her parents for their help with her student loans. Earlier, the streamer had garnered backlash after certain clips went viral, where she claims she had not returned the $170K her parents contributed to get her through college.

While other Twitch streamers like Fanfan defended ExtraEmily after she talked about not paying back her parents for taking on her student loans, others noted that she should help her family out considering her success as a content creator.

In the clips, the streamer is seen saying:

"The only reason they want me to pay it back is because I am a streamer. Because I didn't use my degree. "

When Nmplol asked her how much money it was, she replied that it was $170K, adding that she didn't want to pay it back.

Days after the controversy, ExtraEmily addressed the issue on social media claiming that she has repaid her parents and acknowledged her financial position:

"I paid my parents back for my tuition. I realize how fortunate I am to be in the position I’m in — to have the means to provide for both myself and my family. Contrary to online belief, ever since garnering success as a streamer, I have ensured that my parents’ lifestyle and needs are taken care of. I would never let them suffer; they’re my parents who raised me."

She also criticized those scrutinizing her family dynamics through the clips that had gone viral:

"Regarding the clips of my mom and I, our humor was simply misunderstood and blown out of proportion. We have plenty of conversations off stream as mother and daughter, and what we say on stream is not representative of our whole actual situation or stance."

She also took the blame for bringing up the financial issues during a Twitch stream and giving rise to the controversy, which she claimed was just family banter:

"It was my fault to bring it up in New York. I thought it would be appropriate to discuss given that it’s how my parents and I always banter with each other, and I knew they’d be okay with being the butt of the joke, which they do to me too."

With over 450K followers on Twitch, ExtraEmily has made a name for herself as an IRL streamer. Affiliated with the OTK group, she is also known for her collaborations with other content creators in the Austin area. She also snagged nominations for three categories at the recent Streamer Awards held earlier this year.

In her response to the controversy surrounding her repaying her parents, ExtraEmily stated that the feedback made her realize she should follow through with her commitment:

"Specifically regarding my college tuition, I’m gonna be honest. I frankly would’ve stuck to my ways had this situation not happened because I support my parents through other means, but the feedback made me realize it’s really not that hard to simply follow through on my word and pay them back."

She also explained that her parents were financially stable and thanked the community for showing concern:

"Thank you for caring about my parents, but I assure you they are financially stable even without my assistance and are adequately taken care of regardless."

As proof that she was paying back the money, ExtraEmily shared a screenshot of a bank transfer worth about $47K. The Twitch streamer also mentioned that she would be paying back the rest of the money in installments.
