Twitch streamer Jason "Jasontheween" recently dispelled some misconceptions about his recent visit to the "Countdown Japan" show featuring the South Korean girl group, NewJeans. The streamer was under fire for allegedly exhibiting inappropriate behavior with the group's members. According to Jason, some of these comments labeled him a "creep", "stalker" and "pervert."
Jasontheween first developed a notable connection with the K-pop group NewJeans, particularly through their song "ETA." In September 2024, he celebrated reaching 100,000 Twitch subscribers by dancing to "ETA" during his livestream. This celebration went viral, significantly boosting the song's popularity among non-K-pop audiences.
NewJeans acknowledged the tribute by recreating Jason's dance in a TikTok video, further solidifying their mutual appreciation. However, in January 2025, the streamer faced criticism after posting a vlog where he attempted to visit NewJeans backstage without prior arrangement.
This led to accusations of inappropriate behavior from fans. Jason responded by clarifying that he had backstage access and did not intend to intrude:
"I'm getting compared to the person at the airport going through security to give Hanni a note, bro, I got backstage access, NewJeans was not the only artist I saw backstage... I did not go through security, I simply said, 'Yo! Hey!'."
Fans and netizens accused Jason of invading the group's privacy and exhibiting behavior akin to that of a "sasaeng," a term used in the K-pop community to describe obsessive fans who engage in invasive actions toward idols.
Breaking down Jasontheween's response to the NewJeans "stalker" allegations
Jasontheween explained that he did not have to push his way through security to meet the group and intended to just say "hi". He also said that the "shocked and confused" reaction from NewJeans was purely because they unexpectedly recognized a familiar face:
"I simply saw them... made eye contact and said hi. They weren't shocked and confused in a, 'Oh my God, you f**king creep, what are you doing here', shocked and confused, they were shocked and confused because they didn't expect me to be there."
In response to the criticism, Jason clarified that his backstage visit to NewJeans was not an act of loitering or intrusion. The streamer emphasized that he had legitimate backstage access and intended to greet the members personally, given their prior acquaintance. Jason stated that he did not linger or overstep boundaries, aiming only for a brief, friendly interaction:
"I was going to politely knock the door, say hi, and I felt comfortable enough to do that because I've met them before, I'm not some random f**king guy... I was going to knock, got gifts, drop it off, and dip."
Overall, the streamer wanted it to be known that he had no ill intentions and merely wanted to enjoy his time at a concert:
"It's just weird, I don't want that sh*t attached to me. The word creep, the word stalker, the word pervert. I'm a 20-year-old dude, I don't want [these words] attached to my name."
In other news, Jasontheween claims he will be the mascot at the 2025 Sidemen Charity football match.
