Social media influencer Victoria "Woah Vicky" Rose had the internet buzzing after reports of her being kidnapped in Nigeria spread across the web. A collection of concerning (now-deleted) posts on her X account led people to believe that the influencer had been abducted for a $1 million ransom. Later, Vicky revealed that the entire ordeal was orchestrated as a joke for "fun".

To recap the event timeline, Vicky, via a now-deleted X post claiming to be her kidnapper, had stated that she would be released for a ransom:

"I have kidnapped Vicky. She is with me in Nigeria. I am demanding $1million for her release."

After fans expressed concern, the influencer circled back to check in with her followers, apologizing and confirming that everything was alright:

"Sorry about that y'all, it's all love, I love y'all... I was just bored and having fun and getting a laugh, just getting a laugh fam. It's all love though, I'm just having fun with my brother, everything good though. I'm sorry... please forgive me."

Woah Vicky reveals her kidnapping was staged to portray Nigeria as "safe"

In a now-deleted response video, Woah Vicky claimed that her false kidnapping was staged to educate her fanbase and try to clear up some stigma around the safety in African countries, especially Nigeria:

"Africa is a very safe country, and you will be safe no matter what race you are. I was just trolling because everybody was like, 'Why would she go to Nigeria, is she crazy?', so I just wanted to have a quick joke but then the joke kind of got carried away."

The influencer then went on to introduce her "brother", who was associated with the false kidnapping. The latter spoke about Nigeria's safety and urged interested tourists to not be "scared":

"Nigeria is safe, so if you wanna come to Nigeria, it's safe, don't be scared... ('This is just an example that Nigeria is so safe and I love Nigeria.', said Woah Vicky')."

Ultimately, the influencer was not actually kidnapped; instead, she staged the incident as a social experiment seemingly driven by boredom.
