Nerd City, also known as Doctor Downvote, is a commentary YouTuber who has been uploading videos on his channel for about ten years now. Typically, Nerd City's videos include discussions on YouTuber controversies, where he provides critical takes on creators like Jake Paul, Tana Mongeau, and SSSniperWolf. In 2024, the YouTuber found himself in troubled waters for multiple reasons.
Before these troubles, Nerd City was well-respected online, and although he'd upload irregularly, his videos would do well, garnering millions of views, surpassing his subscriber count of 915,000. Speaking of subscribers, he lost about five thousand in August 2024.
But what changed his status online? What were the incidents that damaged his reputation in 2024? This article will look into the fall of Nerd City and more.
Nerd City's contradictory take on NFTs
In a video titled The most expensive art, released on October 4, 2023, Nerd City called NFTs "stupid" and spoke on influencers like Gary Vee who actively advocate for the tokens, saying that they "day trade attention and trust".
The video could be contradictory because Nerd City ended his discussion by announcing a digital artwork course and his 'Dead Avatar Project', a series of NFTs targeted to his audience.
Several people picked up on this and called the YouTuber out. User @TheKarabanera's comment summed up the negative responses to the video:
"I don't get this. Whole video you're talking just how sh*t this whole idea is, and then you promote your own color of this shi**y idea, without telling how you're any better. Or is your whole point "That guy's art is sh*t"? Because you didn't go beyond those monkeys at all."
Others like @M4-Z3-R0 and @-fv spoke on how the video's end was strange:
"Everything was good until the end."
'The ending of this video is so strange."
The YouTuber replied to this comment, defending himself:
"You'd rather hear about Skillshare again? I'm doing something, chill. It's good."
User @toagradius8856 replied to @-fv's comment, reinforcing their sentiment:
"Yeah like half an hour of talking about a scam artist, then selling a Discord class on digital art felt very weird. And then preempting responses to possible comments people would make about it."
@Scyborg832 responded to this and made a prediction:
"And a lot of the answers were either references to conspiracies or just saying 'No'. [Nerd City is] gonna be [in] a controversy in 6 months I guarantee."
Nerd City has a meltdown on r/youtubedrama
Funnily enough, @Scyborg832's claim did come true. Soon after this video was posted, Nerd City released an hour-long video about YouTuber SSSniperWolf on April 3, 2024. A link to the video was posted on r/youtubedrama and users reacted.
This prompted an ego-driven back and forth between Nerd City (whose alias is u/PagingDoctorDownvote on Reddit) and the r/youtubedrama community.
It seems the YouTuber took the comments under the Reddit post to heart. He defended himself in a losing battle and lashed out against the users commenting about him.
One such instance is when u/AbominableKiwi said they weren't too keen on watching the video:
"Yeah. I just felt discomfort from the [video] notification. Maybe I'll watch later. Who knows."
To this the YouTuber responded, saying:
"I wish you weren’t lying and you actually felt discomfort. How can I increase your ACTUAL pain?"
It did not end here, as The YouTuber continued to react to comments, playing the victim and insulting users under the post.
u/Kingkrool1994 seemed confused and asked:
"I'm a bit out of the loop on Nerd City, what exactly did he do?"
To this the user in question replied, saying:
"As you can see, nothing but not bow to the cowards who dogpile people and pretend everyone is a N*zi for doing something a wittle baby sheep didn’t wike. Think for yourselves, what a pathetic mob."
These types of responses from Nerd City would continue, with many, like u/MahNameJeff420, pointing out his behavior as unnecessary and unhealthy:
"LMAO did your Reddit get hacked? If it’s actually you, you should be aware posting 14 comments in 20 minutes on a month old thread is not healthy behavior. Tell your wife you love her or something. I’m sorry I think your NFT is lame."
Again the YouTuber responded with the same energy, defending himself:
"You don’t need to apologize to me for not wanting to buy an honest product from me, sold at an honest price. Everyone has their reasons."
Overall, Reddit users expressed their dissatisfaction with the YouTuber's recent uploads and projects, and Nerd City did not take the criticism well. This behavior of his can be seen on multiple threads discussing his videos on the subreddit.
Transphobic comments and the TBH podcast
The TBH (To Be Honest) Podcast, featuring Dolan Dark, Pyrocynical, Nerd City, and Colossal Is Crazy, began in 2019. On the podcast, members would explore a range of topics from the streaming world to deeper discussions on life.
Nerd City has had some controversial takes on the podcast, even defending streamer DrDrisrespect after grooming allegations were charged against him.
In one particular episode, the YouTuber had a take on the transgender community:
"I think for the most part, people go down that 'trans pipeline' because they aren't sexually successful, because they're trying to figure out what's going to work for them."
Users under the post found his statement questionable and wondered why Pyrocynical and the rest of the group entertained him.
The TBH podcast also has a Discord server where Patreon members can pay to join. Nerd City on multiple occasions would ban users purely because they criticized him.
On August 18, 2024, Nerd City left the TBH podcast for good, primarily because he felt the topics he wanted to discuss did not resonate well enough with the community.
Before all the drama, the YouTuber's community was quite close-knit. However, the podcast exposed him to the fanbases of three other creators, and dealing with the thoughts and opinions of this enlarged fanbase might've been a challenge for him.
Pyrocynical summed up the entire situation, and wished Nerd City the best, claiming there is no bad blood between the group's members.
