The Amazon-owned livestreaming platform, Twitch, recently faced backlash from prominent streamers as well as online communities for altering the rules of the Marvel Rivals tournament. For context, the Twitch Rivals event for the hero shooter began on January 18, 2025, with 72 content creators divided into 12 teams.

On January 17, 2025, a one-minute-36-second video surfaced on X in which YouTube and Twitch streamer Rachell "Valkyrae" expressed her discontent with a rule modification that Twitch had implemented for the Marvel Rivals tournament.

For context, this event originally had a two-player limit for high-ranking players (Grandmaster and above). Then, the livestreaming platform reportedly changed this rule a week before the tournament began to allow teams to include four high-rated players.

Bogur, a well-known Marvel Rivals content creator, provided some details about the situation on X:

"For context, the upcoming Twitch Rivals had a 2-player limit for GM+ players, but they changed it to 4 players just a week before the tournament. Now, it's just a bunch of Eternity sweats (like us) with over 300 hours stomping on streamers who are just there for fun. At this point, it's more of a pro tournament where the high-rated players will game and everyone else will be AFK [Away From Keyboard]. Twitch Rivals, IMHO [In My Honest Opinion], should be about content creators learning the game, competing, and having fun, but how are they supposed to do any of that if every game is a stomp?"

What did Valkyrae say about the Marvel Rivals Twitch Rivals event?

In a video posted on the X Community, RAETWT, Valkyrae voiced her dissatisfaction with Twitch for changing the rules for the Marvel Rivals tournament ahead of time.

Wondering who planned the "garbage" event, the co-owner of 100 Thieves remarked:

"Like, which Twitch staff member do I need to talk to? I don't understand how this happened. I actually need to say something. I waited five years to play at Twitch Rivals just for this s**t to happen?! This is insane! Like, who planned this garbage?! Yes, I do want to see the messages. Like, whose rat a** idea was this? Like, I don't understand!"

Furthermore, Valkyrae suggested that the livestreaming platform should have mentioned that the Marvel Rivals event was a "professional-only" tournament:

"Oh, my god! I'm so triggered. Like, just say it's a pro-only tourney. Like, why even have people under Grandmaster?"

On January 18, 2025, Valkyrae posted an update on X, asking if Twitch Rivals had "always been this scuffed." Claiming that the platform displayed "another level of unprofessionalism," the 33-year-old wrote:

"Has Twitch Rivals always been this scuffed? I was so excited to finally play in one but the last min rule changes and not listening to the community is another level of unprofessional and unorganized I have ever seen."

On the same day (January 18, 2025), Bogur informed the community that Twitch had reversed the rules for the Marvel Rivals event, limiting teams to two professional/high-ranking players.
