Controversial personality Andrew Tate may be in fresh trouble after the Bucharest Court of Appeals overturned an earlier ruling that allowed him and his brother, Tristan Tate, to move freely within the European Union. The two are now once again restricted to being inside Romania and are banned from leaving the country.
The brothers, along with two Romanian female individuals, were officially charged with human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women in June 2023. All parties involved have since denied the allegations.
This article goes over the history of the allegations made against Andrew Tate, the latest update concerning his prosecution, and potential future extradition to the UK.
Andrew Tate barred from leaving Romania after court overturns previous ruling
Andrew Tate is known for being one of the biggest catalysts in the online "manosphere" or "alpha male" movement that has taken over the internet in the past few years. He has amassed popularity and controversy through his content.
As per Sky News, in April of this year, trial proceedings against Andrew Tate, his brother, Tristan Tate, and two Romanian women were given the green light by a Bucharest court for the aforementioned charges. This was appealed by Tate, and with a ruling pending on the matter, the four were banned from leaving Romania.
Earlier in July 2024, this restriction was once again lifted after a court ruling allowed them freedom of movement within the EU while they were awaiting trial. However, Romania's anti-organized crime prosecution agency DIICOT (Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism) challenged this ruling.
Responding to this, the Bucharest Court of Appeals has now overturned the ruling, which means that Tate is once again confined to Romania and not allowed to leave.
What allegations have been levied against Andrew Tate in the past?
Andrew Tate's first big break in popularity came in the form of his participation in the 2016 iteration of the British reality series Big Brother. However, he was removed from the show following allegations and police investigations of rape, which were closed in 2019 and resulted in no charges being filed against him.
Later on in December 2022, the influencer was arrested in Romania, along with his brother, and put in police custody until April 2023 to prevent him from exiting the country. Official charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women came to be levied on him, his brother, and two Romanian women in June 2023.
The two brothers were then put under house arrest until August 2023. This was lifted soon after by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which replaced the house arrest with "judicial control," allowing them to travel within Bucharest and the surrounding Ilfov County.
In March 2024, the 37-year-old and his brother were served a European arrest warrant by UK authorities in connection with the primary charge of sexual aggression dating back to 2012-2015. A Romanian court also subsequently approved the Tate brothers' extradition to Britain once the trial proceedings took place in Romania.
On July 8, 2024, Andrew Tate and his brother were accused by British authorities of tax evasion amounting to £21 million of earnings from several businesses.
Tate recently raised questions regarding the Secret Service's effectiveness following the much-publicized assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump. He went as far as to say that the attempt may have been part of an elaborate "coup."
