World of Warcraft (WoW) expert and internet personality, Zack "Asmongold" has had quite the journey online. As one of the most recognized names on Twitch, he has managed to carve a significant niche for himself, amassing a loyal fanbase consisting of over 3.4 million followers, with an average of 33,479 viewers watching every time he goes live.

The streamer began actively streaming in 2014 and has remained consistent and retained a loyal fanbase for about 10 years now. He has also become co-founder of One True King (OTK), one of Twitch's biggest content-creator organizations, along with the likes of Mizkif and Sodapoppin.

How did he reach this point in his career and where did he start? We examine the turning points and events that characterized Asmongold's ascent to prominence, from his early years dedicated to MMORPGs to diversification into other content.

The beginning of Asmongold

Before his streaming life, Asmongold worked with the IRS, in Austin, Texas. While contemplating pursuing a law degree, he was introduced to World of Warcraft, a game that would change his life forever. He became obsessed, spending most of his days on the game, slowly mastering everything there is to know about it.

In 2014, he started posting guides and tutorials to YouTube, when very few content creators would make how-to videos related to WoW, let alone in the entertaining fashion he did. This gained him a cult following that would begin to grow.

His passion for the game would often lead him to criticize Blizzard, the developer of WoW and other games like Diablo and Overwatch, whenever he felt things needed fixing or the company wasn't moving in the right direction.

Following the traction he gained on YouTube, Asmon took his talent to Twitch, believing that live streaming had the greatest growth potential for him at the time. The struggle initially was tough, but while remaining consistent and authentic to his audience, he broke 100,000 followers in 2016.

In 2019, following the release of World of Warcraft Classic, Asmon would hit more than 260,000 concurrent viewers on stream, cementing him as one of the greatest Twitch streamers.

Asmon's candid commentary fuels his growth.

The WoW Streamer can have quite colorful thoughts at times and often conveys this to his audience. He's a firm believer in staying true to oneself and retaining individuality. This is partly why his viewers find him so entertaining. His hilarious, outlandish, and witty comments, although causing controversy sometimes, make him a unique and stand-out creator.

Asmon considers himself to be more of a "personality" rather than a "gaming streamer" and often does IRL content, monologues, and social commentary to mix up his content, never letting viewers know what to expect.

Loss, moving forward, and surpassing limits.

In October 2021, Asmongold lost his mother. This turning point not only impacted his personal life but also caused him to take some time off from streaming to grieve. Recognizing his vulnerability and the depth of his loss, the gaming community came together to support and offer condolences during this trying time.

Grief set aside, the Twitch streamer came back stronger than ever. This was supported by the growth of OTK, and its members, which include prominent creators like Mizkif, Esfand, Rich Campbell, Nmplol, and Sodapoppin.

In 2022, Asmon picked up a new game, Lost Ark, another MMORPG developed by Smilegate RPG. While streaming the game on February 11, 2022, he had a viewership of over 420,000.

Even today, Asmongold remains his original candid self, playing MMORPGs, providing meaningful commentary, and collaborating with his fellow members at OTK. His house is famous for being incredibly messy and has become a trademark for him.

Apart from his streaming efforts, Asmongold started a publishing company for games named Mad Mushroom. By offering services like quality control, feedback, localization, live operations, platform relationships, and financing, this endeavor seeks to assist game developers while guaranteeing that creators maintain greater control over their projects.
