All you need to know about Katy Perry and Wendy’s drama

On April 14, 2025, Katy Perry traveled to space and back with five other women in a Blue Origin rocket. In the wake of this, X account Pop Crave posted, “Katy Perry has returned from space,” alongside an image of the pop icon in her astronaut costume.

The following day, fast food giant Wendy’s replied to the post by writing, “Can we send her back?” that amassed 2.1 million views at the time of writing. While Katy didn’t address it, the comment earned severe backlash from netizens.

Subsequently, the hamburger and fries chain reshared Pop Base’s tweet showing Perry kissing the Earth after returning to Earth from space. They captioned it, “I kissed the ground and I liked it,” alluding to her song, I Kissed a Girl. Additionally, they shared a comment under their post that read:

“When we said women in STEM, this isn’t what we meant.”

While certain social media users appeared to agree with Wendy’s and joined in the fun, others continued to hit back.

On April 17, 2025, Wendy’s issued a statement to outlets such as People and Entertainment Weekly in response to the criticism.

"We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy's has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world talent," representatives stated.

However, they fell short of a direct apology. Meanwhile, an insider told People that Wendy’s tweets were more of a “choice” rather than a “joke,” which was not only “disrespectful” but “blatantly inappropriate.”

The source added it was not a “harmless banter” but a “billion-dollar brand using its platform to publicly demean a woman,” calling it “irresponsible.”

They went on to claim that Wendy’s was not adding to the conversation but rather dragging it down and contributing to a culture where women were looked down upon for standing out or daring to do something different.

Particularly referring to the “Can we send her back?” tweet, the insider mentioned it was “shameful bullying” and reflected a “troubling willingness to tear down in today’s society.”

They also pointed out that Wendy’s face was that of a woman, which made the situation “hypocritical” as well as “painfully ironic.”

The source concluded that people expected more from such a reputable brand, and Wendy’s should “do the right thing,” apologize, and ensure to do better in the future.

Another source told Page Six that Wendy's tweets were not "humor" but rather "targeted hostility."

In brief, about Katy Perry's spaceflight

Katy Perry launched into space on April 14, 2025, in a Blue Origin launch vehicle called New Shepard, which was part of its New Shepard Mission NS-31, aimed at promoting space tourism.

The all-female, fully autonomous 11-minute spaceflight also had CBS host Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, space researcher and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, movie producer Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sanchez, the fiancée of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, on board.

The rocket was launched from a pad in West Texas and reached the Karman Line, the official space boundary located 103 kilometers above sea level. There, the six passengers briefly experienced weightlessness before successfully returning to Earth in a parachute-aided soft landing. The mission was broadcast by Blue Origin.

No pilot was present aboard, and the passengers did not manually operate the vehicle. They were trained over two days, focusing on physical fitness, emergency protocols, safety measures, and zero-gravity procedures.

Two support members, dubbed Crew Members Six & Seven, were present on the ground. One of them guided the passengers while the other communicated from the control room.

Katy Perry took a daisy flower to space as a tribute to her daughter Daisy. Upon her return to Earth, she shared feeling "super connected to life" and "so connected to love." The day after the mission, she tweeted, "There is no place like home.”

Later, she also told the press that their mission was for the “benefit of Earth,” and being a part of it was her way of modelling “courage and worthiness and fearlessness.”

She mentioned the decision was hard as she’s a mother, but she needed to “surrender” to the universe for once.

Co-passenger Gayle King shared that Perry sang the Louis Armstrong song, What a Wonderful World, when the crew returned to their seats after experiencing weightlessness.

Notably, Wendy’s was not the only outlet to have mocked Katy’s mission. Fellow celebrities, including Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Wilde, and Olivia Munn, were among others who ridiculed the spaceflight.
