Shannon Sharpe steps back from ESPN amid s*xual assault lawsuit

An anonymous woman sued Shannon Sharpe for battery and s*xual assault in Nevada on April 20, 2025. In the lawsuit, Jane Doe claimed that she met Sharpe in 2023 at a gym in Los Angeles when she was 20, followed by a two-year-long consensual relationship.

The woman alleged that the former NFL player r*ped her during the course of their relationship. An excerpt from the lawsuit against Sharpe reads:

“Defendant Shannon Sharpe, a man who is accustomed to getting what he wants, completely fails to understand this basic concept. After many months of manipulating and controlling Plaintiff – a woman more than thirty years younger than he – and repeatedly threatening to brutally choke and violently slap her, Sharpe refused to accept the answer no and r*ped Plaintiff, despite her sobbing and repeated screams of ‘no.’”

Further, Jane Doe cited the instance of Shannon Sharpe threatening to kill her after she arrived late at his house on one occasion.

She also claims that Sharpe filmed some of their physical encounters without her knowledge and shared the footage with others. The woman is seeking $50 million in damages via the lawsuit.

Following the uproar that the lawsuit has created, Shannon Sharpe declared that he would be stepping away from his duties at ESPN on April 24, 2025. For the unversed, Sharpe worked on the sports broadcasting network's First Take as an analyst.

The former NFL player's statement mentioned:

"At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties. I will be devoting this time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me. I plan to return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason."

Sharpe's statement was backed by ESPN, which stated that they agree with the former NFL player's decision to step away, given that it is a serious situation.

Denying the allegations against him in a video posted on April 22, 2025, Shannon Sharpe dubbed the lawsuit a "shakedown". He further accused Jane Doe's attorney of Tony Buzbee, of conspiring against him.
