American singer and songwriter, Demi Lovato, is once again embracing her viral ‘Poot Lovato’ meme. The 32-year-old artist recently shared a new video on the social media platform, TikTok, poking fun at one of their past meme which was launched in October 2015.
Poot Lovato became viral after a fan shared a washed-out photo of the singer on Tumblr 10 years ago, and created a fictional backstory that claimed that they have a long-lost twin sister who has spent her whole life locked away in a basement.
On April 22, 2025, a video of the former Disney Channel star was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by the account @PopBase. Sharing her TikTok and a throwback image of the viral meme, the account informed that Lovato had referenced the viral meme in a new TikTok.
In the video, the singer is seen doing the voiceover in the trending TikTok audio, “Wow, what an offer… Let me sleep on it, though.” Meanwhile, the text on the video reads:
“When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…”
After @PopBase shared the video on X, netizens were quick to comment.
“This is such an iconic moment in pop culture history!” an X user wrote.
Many users on X praised the Heart Attack singer for her sense of humor and for embracing the meme.
“that’s awesome demi has such a great sense of humor about it,” an X user wrote.
“I’m glad she’s enjoying and embracing the Poot meme,” a Netizen added.
“Demi Lovato just said 'Poot’s back' and we’re not ready,” another fan Tweeted.
Meanwhile, as the meme is quite old, some Twitter users were seemingly not entertained by Demi Lovato's TikTok video.
“Poot Lovato strikes again, I guess,” another user commented.
“She really said if you can’t beat the meme, become the meme,” an X user added.
“Poot entering her comeback era on her own terms,” an X account added.
What is Demi Lovato's Poot Lovato meme?
According to J-14, the meme first went viral in 2015 after debuting on Tumblr. At the time, the internet went berserk after a washed-out and seemingly unflattering image of Demi Lovato surfaced online and Tumblr users claimed that the singer had a twin sister, named Poot.
The since-deleted original post reads, as per J-14:
“Demi’s twin sister. She was locked in a basement her whole life. This picture was taken the first time she went outside. Her name is Poot.”
The image was originally captured when Demi Lovato walked the red carpet at the 2014 Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium. However, it was revealed that the picture was photoshopped. The singer also spoke publicly of Poot in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2023.
“When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me, and I was like, 'Oh no, that’s a really bad angle'… But Poot was Photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn’t my face but it was definitely weird when it went viral… it’s really funny to look back on,” she said.
Notably, the artist even got cupcakes with Poot’s face on them to celebrate their birthday in August 2023.
Demi Lovato was initially unhappy with her becoming a meme and expressed her discontent on Twitter in a series of since-deleted tweets. However, over the years, the singer has continued the joke and shared social media reactions to the Poot Lovato meme.
