The 2024 WNBA season is coming to an end in less than a week with the playoffs scheduled to start on Sept. 22. A'ja Wilson ended any doubts about her MVP campaign by becoming the first player in league history to score 1,000 points in a season.
Caitlin Clark also broke records this past week by becoming the player with the most assists in a single season. Furthermore, she broke the rookie record for most points in a season while also scoring a new career-high 35 points in the Indiana Fever's win over the Dallas Wings.
Here's a closer look at the final WNBA MVP ladder rankings heading into the last stretch of the regular season.
Final 2024 WNBA Most Valuable Player Ladder
#5. Alyssa Thomas | Forward | Connecticut Sun
- Week 14 Ranking: No. 5
- Games Played (Week 15) - 3 GP (2 W, 1 L)
- Average (Week 15) - 6.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 10.0 APG, 0.3 SPG 0.7 BPG
- Average (Season) - 10.3 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 7.9 APG, 1.6 SPG 0.5 BPG
Alyssa Thomas will likely finish in the top five of WNBA MVP voting this season after being the runner-up last year. Thomas had a down year compared to last season, but the Connecticut Sun is in a much better spot. She didn't do a lot of scoring this year but was still doing it all for the Sun.
Thomas deserved to finish in the top five of the MVP ladder due to her contributions to the Sun's success. She could have been higher if she nearly averaged a triple-double and her scoring was not on par with her production last year. Nevertheless, it's a well-deserved spot for the versatile forward.
#4. Breanna Stewart | Forward | New York Liberty
- Week 14 Ranking: No. 4
- Games Played (Week 15) - 3 GP (2 W, 1 L)
- Average (Week 15) - 25.3 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 2.3 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.7 BPG
- Average (Season) - 20.7 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.7 SPG, 1.3 BPG
The reigning WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart shared the spotlight with teammate Sabrina Ionescu this season, which was not a bad thing. The New York Liberty are likely to finish the season with the best record in the league. Ionescu might have stepped up her game this year, but Stewart still deserved a top five finish in MVP voting.
"Stewie" has had some ups and downs this season, especially with her shooting. Nevertheless, she remains one of the best players in the WNBA due to her scoring and defense. Her current goal right now is not to take home another MVP but another championship.
#3. Caitlin Clark | Guard | Indiana Fever
- Week 14 Ranking: No. 3
- Games Played (Week 15) - 3 GP (1 W, 2 L)
- Average (Week 15) - 23.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.0 BPG
- Average (Season) - 19.5 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 8.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.7 BPG
Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark will likely finish the 2024 WNBA MVP ladder at the No. 3 spot. Clark might not get some love from the voters but did enough to warrant a top five MVP voting finish although it's not far-fetched to expect her to be in the final three.
Clark broke the assists record in her first season and her scoring is just getting better. She's also among the best players in the league, so it won't be surprising if she disrupts the MVP voting to prevent A'ja Wilson from winning the award unanimously.
#2. Napheesa Collier | Forward | Minnesota Lynx
- Week 14 Ranking: No. 2
- Games Played (Week 15) - 3 GP (3 W, 0 L)
- Average (Week 15) - 17.3 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 3.0 APG, 2.3 SPG, 1.7 BPG
- Average (Season) - 20.3 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.9 SPG, 1.3 BPG
If it was a different season, Napheesa Collier could have won the WNBA MVP with how she has carried the Minnesota Lynx to an amazing campaign. The Lynx have only lost one game since the Olympic break, thanks in large part to Collier's offense and defense.
Collier has shown that she's on the level of A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart among the best forwards in the league. She should finish in the top three and be a finalist for this year's MVP award. She also missed some games before the Olympic break, which effectively killed her chances of catching up to A'ja Wilson.
#1 - A'ja Wilson | Forward | Las Vegas Aces
- Week 14 Ranking: No. 1
- Games Played (Week 15) - 3 GP (3 W, 0 L)
- Average (Week 15) - 23.7 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, 2.3 BPG
- Average (Season) - 27.0 PPG, 12.0 RPG, 2.3 APG, 1.8 SPG, 2.6 BPG
A'ja Wilson put any doubts about her WNBA MVP campaign to rest by becoming the first player in league history to score 1,000 points in a single season. Wilson has been nearly unstoppable this season, so fans should expect her to take home her third MVP trophy.
Wilson might also be having the best individual season in WNBA history although the Las Vegas Aces have a much harder mountain to climb for the three-peat. The Aces are likely ending the campaign in the No. 4 spot, which should not be a hindrance to her being named a unanimous MVP.
