The Golden State Valkyries roster started to get filled today during the 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft. After announcing their first-ever head coach and revealing their logo and colors, the Valkyries still had steps to take before being 100% ready to take the court in the 2025 WNBA season.
The expansion draft started at 6:30 p.m. ET with the Valkyries having the chance to select certain players from each of the other 12 WNBA franchises. They weren't able to pick six players that each team protected, but had the chance to land intriguing assets to start their project.
While there were some surprises, the Golden State Valkyries roster is nearly completed, waiting for the 2025 WNBA draft. Check out everything you need to know about the newest WNBA franchise.
Golden State Valkyries roster after Expansion Draft
After the Valkyries complete this process, their initial roster, with one player selected from each team, looks like this:
By opting against picking a player from the Seattle Storm, the Golden State Valkyries roster has an open spot. This opens the door for them to add a free agent once the free market opens, but the rules only allow them to add one across the league.
Can Golden State Valkyries make trades?
This process might be a little confusing, but the rules are clear. They could engage in trade talks with the other 12 franchises in the league from Nov. 25 through Dec. 5, a day before the expansion draft. The league states:
"Golden State will be permitted to make trades with existing teams, including (i) an agreement to select a particular player from the list of Available Expansion Draft players, and trade that player to a team other than their existing team; and (ii) an agreement to select (or not select) a particular player from such trading team’s list of Available Expansion Draft players."
Will Golden State Valkyries participate in 2025 WNBA draft?
The Golden State Valkyries roster can be completed with a signing, via trade or through the draft. The 2025 edition of the draft will likely include UConn superstar Paige Bueckers, but it's hard to imagine she will be available when the Valkyries are on the clock.
They will be the first team to draft after the four lottery squads, owning the No. 5 overall pick of the night. Moreover, they will have the No. 17 and No. 30 pick in the second and third rounds of the event, respectively.
