WNBA rookie star Caitlin Clark broke several records in the Indiana Fever's 83-78 win over the New York Liberty on Saturday. Her play built on what has already been an impressive season for the University of Iowa alum as she looks to cement her place in the league.
The game was a back and forth one, with Clark and the Fever jumping out to an early lead before then losing the second and third quarters. In the fourth, however, Clark led the way for the Fever, helping the team secure an 83-78 win with 19 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds.
While her triple-double was impressive enough in its own right, it also saw Caitlin Clark break several WNBA records.
Four insane WNBA records Caitlin Clark broke on Saturday
#4: Fastest WNBA player since 1998 to record 150 career assists
With her 13 assists on Saturday, Caitlin Clark cemented her place as the fastest player to record 150 career assists since 1998. Clark set the record in just 22 games played, while averaging 7.1 assists per game.
As fans were quick to point out, there have been a number of instances where Clark missed out on opportunities to record assists because of errors on her teammates’ parts.
#3: Most double-doubles with assists by a rookie
With her triple-double on Saturday, Caitlin Clark tied Sue Bird with three double-doubles with assists by a rookie. Sitting just behind the pair, four other rookies are tied with two double-doubles including assists.
Given how much time is left in the season, it seems highly likely that Caitlin Clark winds up breaking the tie with Sue Bird and becoming the sole owner of the record.
#2: First WNBA rookie to record a triple-double
Clark’s triple-double on Saturday was reportedly the first ever recorded by a rookie in the WNBA. Early in the fourth-quarter, Clark had already secured herself a double-double, however, she then pulled down a rebound, securing her place in WNBA history as the first rookie to log a triple-double.
The moment came as Clark and the Fever were in the midst of their late-game comeback, with fans applauding the achievement.
#1: Fastest rookie in WNBA history to record 350 points, 100 rebounds, and 150 assists
As Clark has shown throughout her rookie year, she can do it all on the court. After just 22 games, she has already become the fastest rookie in WNBA history to record 350 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists. The previous holder of this record was Sabrina Ionescu, who made the stat line in 30 games.
Clark was able to do so by averaging 16.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game, en route to her first All-Star game selection.
With plenty of action still yet to take place throughout the remainder of the WNBA season, only time will tell what other records Caitlin Clark is able to break as a rookie.
