Smith is 6 feet 4 inches tall and started her basketball career at Wesley College in Melbourne, Victoria before joining college basketball in the United States at Stanford University. While at Stanford, she was awarded Second-team All-American by the Associated Press in 2019. Smith began her professional career in the WNBA in 2019 when she was drafted as the 8th overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury.

Smith has been a very effective power forward and also a center throughout her playing career for the team. She has also played for Australia in international tournaments such as the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and the Paris Olympics 2024.
