When WNBA player DiJonai Carrington lost her grandfather recently, she lost perhaps her biggest fan. It was only right, then, for the Connecticut Sun guard to recognize him in a social media tribute after his death.
On Saturday, Carrington posted an Instagram story with a heartfelt message for her late grandpa:
Carrington's IG story shows her grandfather's casket being laid into the ground. Flowers adorn the top of the casket, along with a Connecticut Sun jersey that once belonged to Carrington.
"I love you forever grandpa and after that," read Carrington's caption. "had to put the last jersey he saw me play in there with him forever."
In another IG story, Carrington described what her grandfather went through and how much he meant to her career:
"He fought so hard and through so much pain," Carrington wrote in part. "My only solace is knowin' that he can now rest in peace with grandma and the Lord. I'll never have to right words to express what he means to me. Really my guy fr. & never missed a game in phx from a kid to the WNBA."
DiJonai Carrington has had plenty of guidance throughout her career
Just a few days ago, Carrington expressed her appreciation for another mentor figure in her life.
This past Tuesday, the 5-foot-11 guard reunited with Kim Mulkey, her former head coach at Baylor. A collaborative post by the Connecticut Sun and the LSU Tigers shows Carrington and Mulkey smiling as they embrace.
"This reunion >>>" the caption read.
After spending four seasons in Stanford, Carrington finished her collegiate career at Baylor during the 2020-2021 NCAA season. That season happened to be Mulkey's last with the Lady Bears whom she'd led to three national championships over the course of 21 years.
On Tuesday, Mulkey's LSU Tigers took on the Seton Hall Pirates in the Basketball Hall of Fame showcase. This game, won easily by the Tigers 91-64, was held at the Mohegan Sun Arena, which is the Connecticut Sun's home venue.
In a gesture of respect, Carrington pounced on the opportunity to reunite with the coach that helped her win honors like Big-12 Newcomer of the Year and Sixth Person of the Year.
