She had been undrafted out of Rutgers University in 2013 but she did not give up and was able to join the league in 2015 with the Atlanta Dream. She got her big break when she signed for the Indiana Fever in 2016, where she established herself as a star and was awarded the MVP of the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game, making her the first undrafted player to achieve this.

Wheeler was a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school in 2009 and had a few rough years after college. She won her first All-Star nomination in 2019, her only one as of September 2024. In her junior year, Wheeler was the team’s leader in steals and scored 9 points per game on average. She was a good defender and a good scorer which was an asset to the team and helped the team to perform well.

Wheeler’s senior year was very difficult for her because she lost her mother to cancer. Nevertheless, she remained a strong player on the court and showed great resilience in the face of personal loss. Her best season in college was in her senior year, wherein she averaged a career-high 11.0 points, 2.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. Erica Wheeler attended Parkway Academy in Miramar, Florida, and the time she spent there helped her build a successful basketball career. The most memorable high school years of Wheeler were her being named as a McDonald’s All-American in 2009, which is a list of the top high school basketball players in the United States. This achievement was a good preparation for her collegiate and professional career as it showed her dedication and talent.

Besides her personal accomplishments, Wheeler was instrumental in guiding Parkway Academy to several successful seasons. She averaged 26.2 points, 3.6 assists, 0.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game in her high school career, playing a total of 5 games and scoring a total of 131 points.
