Eziyoda “Ezi” Magbegor is one of the most famous Australian professional basketball players. She is a center for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA and USK Prague in the EuroLeague Women. Magbegor’s basketball career started in Australia where she played for Canberra Capitals and Melbourne Boomers of the WNBL. She was able to achieve many victories that helped her to become the WNBL Youth Player of the Year 3 times (2018, 2020, and 2022). She was selected 12th overall in the 2019 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and became an immediate contributor to the team that won the WNBA Championship in 2020.

Magbegor’s international career is also remarkable. She has played for Australia in different tournaments such as the Olympics and FIBA World Championship. She was able to win a bronze medal for the Australian team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Magbegor has been awarded the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team twice so far (2022 and 2023) as of September 2024.

Ezi Magbegor did not attend college in the United States and did not play college basketball in the country either. However, she developed herself in Australia where she played for Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence and later for Canberra Capitals in WNBL. While playing for the Centre of Excellence, she proved her worth and was signed by the Canberra Capitals for the 2017-18 WNBL season. Magbegor’s decision to remain in Australia meant that she was able to grow under the tutelage of experienced coaches, playing in the tough European basketball system and with the guidance of experienced players, which was a major boost to her growth as a player.

In the WNBL, Magbegor has been outstanding and has been awarded the WNBL Youth Player of the Year in 2018, 2020, and 2022. She averaged 12.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in the 2019-20 season playing for the Melbourne Boomers and established herself as one of the most promising players in the league. Her achievements in the WNBL and her international career with the Australian Team led to her getting drafted into the 2019 WNBA Draft where she was drafted 12th overall by the Seattle Storm. After entering the league, Ezi Magbegor also entered Deakin University pursuing a degree in Commerce, later switching to psychology.

Ezi Magbegor went to Lake Ginninderra College in Canberra, Australia and this is where she started to make her mark in basketball. In high school, she played for the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, a program that prepares talented players for the national team. Magbegor’s performances at Lake Ginninderra and the Centre of Excellence attracted attention soon enough to demonstrate her ability to become a dominant center.

Magbegor began her professional career at the age of 17 when she joined the Canberra Capitals for the WNBL season of 2017/2018. Her decision to remain in Australia and build her career in the country proved fruitful as she remained a top player and received recognition.
