Chelsea Gray is set to make her much-anticipated season debut during the Las Vegas Aces' game against the Seattle Storm at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Wednesday. The three-time WNBA champion will play her first game for the Aces after missing the starting 12 games of the season:
"It's been a long time coming....October 15th I think was the last time. So I’m excited to actually get on the court and be ready to play," Gray told reporters ahead of the Aces' game against the Storm.
Gray was sidelined after injuring her left foot during Game 3 of the WNBA Finals last year. Since then, the one-time Finals MVP has been rehabilitating and making all possible efforts to return to action.
Ahead of the Aces' last few games, Gray was listed as a game-time decision, but the veteran point guard ultimately ended up taking no part in games.
Aces head coach Becky Hammon also confirmed that Gray's season debut will take place on Wednesday:
"She was full go in practice today. She's been playing 5v5. She is right there. I intend on playing her a little bit tomorrow at different spots in the game," Hammon told reporters.
Gray will return to professional basketball after a lengthy hiatus. It will be interesting to see how many minutes she gets to play on her first game back from injury (via ESPN):
"We're going to see how that goes and evaluate and make an in-game call then," Hammon said on Gray's potential playing time on Wednesday.
"We kind of have a general idea of what we're doing with her, but it can change one way or another depending on how it goes," she added.
Chelsea Gray's return a huge boost for stuttering Aces
The defending champions have been slow to get off the blocks this season. A'ja Wilson & Co. are 6-6 so far this season.
Gray's return will undoubtedly provide a major boost to the team as they eye a 3-peat. The floor general's return is bound to elevate the team's performance over the weeks to come.
"Not only have we missed her mind and her passing and her scoring, we've missed her spirit," Hammon added.
Gray played in all 40 regular season games for the Aces last year. The five-time All-Star averaged a career-high in points, rebounds and assists.
Gray averaged 15.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 7.3 apg along with 1.4 spg last year.
