In preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics, Team USA will play an exhibition game against Germany in London on Tuesday. Set to tip-off at 3 p.m. ET at O2 Arena, the matchup serves as the ideal warmup for both teams, who will be looking to clinch gold in Paris.
One of the most obvious stars on Germany’s roster is Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally, who lines up alongside her sister Nyara Sabally, who is also expected to play a major role in the tournament. Sataou had picked up a shoulder injury during the Olympics qualifying campaign in February and was largely expected to be missing from the Olympics after being absent ever since for the Wings.
However, after undergoing surgery in the same month, Sataou Sabally has completed a remarkable recovery and is now set to suit up for Germany’s exhibition game against Team USA on Tuesday. The update comes after the player was seen taking part in recent practice sessions along with the rest of the roster, as she is now expected to start today's game.
Satou Sabally is expected to be a major player for Germany throughout the Games, with the 2023 Most Improved Player's ability to contribute on both ends of the court. Her leadership skills and experience make her one of the obvious leaders on the team.
Team USA set to play Germany in exhibition game, with Satou Sabally set to return
The game might prove to be a false start considering Germany will be pulling a major upset if it can defeat the USA. After all, the U.S. women's national team boasts some of the biggest stars in women's basketball, with the likes of A’ja Wilson, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu and Diana Taurasi leading the way.
The Sabally sisters are bound to be the key for Germany, although they also boast of stars such as Emily Bessoir and Leoni Fibitch, all capable of making an impact on their day. For Satou Sabally, being available represents the conclusion of a remarkable recovery, as she was initially expected to be missing for the entire tournament.
However, in April, Dallas Wings president Greg Bibb said Sabally would be available for the rest of the WNBA season as well:
“She’s on schedule with her rehab. We expect Satou to come back around the Olympic break, be ready to compete for Germany in the Olympics, and then see her for sure in a Dallas Wings jersey over the final 15 games of the regular season.”
Regardless, the exhibition matchup against the USA in itself is merely for preparation for the actual tournament, as Germany is set to tip-off its campaign against Belgium on July 29.
